I am just wondering. Please no arguments. For those out there who may be learly of certain vaccines what are your thoughts on the HepB shot for health care workers? I am not anti-vaccine, but I do research the side effects and look at the adverse reports concerning them before making my choice.I have been reading a lot about the HepB shot and the many reported problems with it (autoimmune, etc) and right now am not sure what I want to do concerning this vaccine before I start nursing school.

Of course I also don't want to get HepB either! Am I just being paranoid? Has anyone here had any bad reactions to the HepB vaccine?
Thanks :)
Hello, marilynmom,
Here are a few threads here at Allnurses.com about this:

Well, my only thing was this particular vaccine hurt WAY worse than any other injection I ever had, lol! The preservative maybe? It burned from my neck to my pinky for a good 24 hours, but went away.
Cause autoimmune disorder? Hmmmmm......I had my injection series in 1993 or so. I was disgnoses with RA in 2005. A connection? Personally, I doubt it!
I admit, I just skimmed the links you posted marilynmom, but it appears they were more focussed on the debate on whether or not to vaccinate infants/chidren with the Hep B vaccine. Any data on the vaccine causing harm in adults? I could have just missed it. I tend to get exhausted easily and skip some things, so....
:) good luck!
I've had two Heb B shots in the series of three and have had no reactions. Yes the shot hurt a lot! The first one hurt so much that I was scared to go back! Then I heard on tv that if you cough a shot won't hurt. yeah right. But I tried it and it works! I felt the needle puncture and nothing else! I told the nurse beforehand that I wasn't sick, just doing an experiment. I coughed and felt no pain. I stopped and started to feel the pain of the shot and started coughing again and the pain went away. (long shot!) :)
I would be more afraid of getting Heb B than of the shot.

I'm pretty sure that's a reaction to the vaccination!
I'm sorry, I couldn't resist - and I'm totally kidding.
I've had the Hep B series, as have both of my children and my mother. None of us have had any problems with it but in my nursing program, it is the only one you have the option of not receiving.

I did not receive the series, as I am very uncomfortable about the ingredients in vaccines. I personally feel that they are responsible for other illness in our society. However, I'm one of those "crazy-non-vaccine-lunatics" who, in my experience, is assumed to be uneducated and stupid and crazy for not following the general public and just vaccinating against everything.
That's okay. I firmly believe people have to make their own decisions on vaccines and either way a person decides it should be researched and educated...not just done because the school system says you have to (which of course, is not true).
good luck in your decision. Cassi
Has anyone here had any bad reactions to the HepB vaccine?
None. Zero. Nada. I have had the series of 3 shots and not a problem in the least and no pain at all.
This was requested by only one of the several hospitals where we are doing clinicals and we could opt out of it if we signed a form stating we knew the risks and did not want the shot.
Regards,
Ken
