Did anyone apply to UCLA's MECN Program for Fall 2009?

Published

Just wondering if anyone else applied to this program. I went to UCLA for undergrad but I pretty much think I have no shot of getting into this grad program.

Does anyone know anything about how many people they admit? What they are looking for?

Yeah, it seems a bit cruel for you JSS. Did you apply to other schools? Was this your first choice?

Hi everyone. I've been following this thread for a long time now and have just decided to join and post today to let you all know I have also been rejected by UCLA. Today I walked over to my mailbox doing the sign of the cross before I opened it, only to be devastated by the sight of a small white envelope from the UCLA SON. Sadly I knew what it meant. Forcefully opening it hoping for news of even a place on the waiting list, sadly there was no news of that either. For those of you who are still waiting, I really wish you all the best of luck and to not give up hope. Best of luck for all those who already got in. And for those of us who have already been rejected, God has a place for all of us somewhere and I guess UCLA just isnt it. But eventually, good news will come by. Just hang in there :wink2:

Maybe big acceptance envelop takes longer to be delievered.

The two programs are very different though. The UCLA program leads to a MSN and the training to become a Clinical Nurse Leader. My understanding is that you have to get experience before you can actually put that training to use.

The CSULA program, however, expects you to begin working as a nurse (after passing the NCLEX, at the end of the 5th quarter). Then continues onto the Masters phase while you are working/getting experience as a nurse. At the end of this program, you get an MSN with a specialization as a nurse practitioner (since you would have already accumulated sufficient hours of clinical experience as a RN). CSULA has always been my first choice--I will be devastated if I don't get in there.

Do you know how many people applied to that program? I am considering applying next year.

Yea, well everyone has to get their letters first, then send in their yes or no. Here goes another waiting period. Just keeping my fingers crossed.

I can only share in your anxiety and frustration because I can just picture myself there tomorrow. It's gonna be ok. Just hang in there and things will work. I think you should be happy that you even got on the wait list. Definitely something to celebrate! :yeah:

musictonurse,

I applied and just interviewed for CSULA's ELMN program and from what I understand they accept 20 people for each cohort. It's quite small, which is nice because everyone gets to work together and you have that built-in support system/friendships. The bad part about that is that it makes it more competitive!!

I would highly recommend applying to CSULA's program--it is an amazing program (but of course it's my top choice so I'm biased :wink2:)

Haha good thinking!

Maybe they did it backwards this year, rejection letters out first and then acceptance letters? If that's the case.. Bring on waiting till next week!!

God, I hope you are right!

I'm so sorry that you didn't make it this time. Did you apply elsewhere?

I think around 150 applied. Honestly I regret not applying to more programs specifically designed for non-nurses to become NPs. That's my goal. I know there is more than one way to get there, but looking back, I should have applied to more programs. I read on the Columbia ETP thread that they accept around 70% of the applicants. That may or may not be true, but now I wonder why I didn't just give it a shot. I really didn't want to accumulate the extra debt, but it seems like a great program.

Hang in there everyone!!

Thank you, I will try to remember your words tomorrow and I'm sorry to hear about your small envelope :( booo I might not be able to open the small envelope. I think I will suddenly forget how to open envelopes. This is really nerve wracking. At least you know now! I still have to wait!!

Musictonurse I feel your pain.. I'd like to say at least the weather will console me if I receive a rejection letter, but I live in the uk, so enough said.

I'm still hoping for martinis and a performance by Sarah. Not loosing hope yet :)
