Did anyone apply to UCLA's MECN Program for Fall 2009?

Published

Just wondering if anyone else applied to this program. I went to UCLA for undergrad but I pretty much think I have no shot of getting into this grad program.

Does anyone know anything about how many people they admit? What they are looking for?

I applied, i think they are looking at the applicant as a whole, the full package so to speak. From what i understand from reading last years thread, they get a copious amount of students applying to the program and they are incredibly competitive, so i doubt i'll get in. :/

:wink2: Hello,

I'm currently in the MECN program now and the class is extremely diverse in academic disciplines, background, work experience, etc. I'm happy with the program, minus the cost of graduate education! I just want to wish you all good luck with your acceptances/decision and I know how stressful it is to have to wait until March to hear any decision. Yes, the pool of applicants is competitive but the admissions committee are looking for (imo) applicants that clearly defined their decisions to enter nursing as a profession and can justify it with their academic, professional or community service history. I was told there are about 470 applicants this year (last year approx 350), but quantity does not necessarily mean anything about one's chances. Also, people do get accepted off the waiting list. Let me know if you have any questions about the program and are trying to make a decision between one school or the other.

I applied to the MECN program as well. I volunteer at Hoag as a CCE and also volunteered at CHOC for a while. I had a 3.7 as an undergrad (English and Philosophy major) and got A's in all prereq's except Anatomy (a C) and Microbiology (a B). I'm taking Chemistry right now, and would need to take epidemiology in the summer if I get in.

I doubt I'll get in, but if I do, it'll be a very pleasant surprise! I already got into Azuza Pacific's accelerated (EENAP) program, so if I don't get into UCLA, I will go there. And even if I do get into UCLA, I may still go to Azuza Pacific, as it is probably much less expensive....

My physiology professor did write me a phenomenal letter of recommendation, so who knows, maybe that will help! :wink2:

Well you sound like you have more going for you than I do!

I applied for this program as well! I was worried that it was going to be super competitive and this post has confirmed that! 470 applicants is a lot!

If accepted to this program, what are everyone's plans once you graduate with your master's after 2 years? Are you going to stop there or continue on to become an NP, etc?

I'm getting very nervous about hearing back as well. March is too far away! I also applied to USD's program and have an interview in February, but UCLA is my first choice (due to costs and other reasons). Even though I feel I am qualified, I keep doubting that I will get in because I know there are so many other qualified applicants. Hopefully this forum can help calm my nerves down a bit :)

I had originally heard there were close to 1,000 applicants, so hearing 400 something makes me feel a lot better!

Best of luck to you all!

Hey everybody, does anybody know when we are supposed to hear from UCLA? and how (snail mail vs email)?

The email I received a little while back said you could expect written notification in early March.

Hey Guys,

Yes, you will receive your admissions packet in the snail mail in early March so do not fret! The lucky few that receive a graduate fellowship might be notified by e-mail a little earlier that they have been accepted to UCLA. You will also get an electronic letter from the graduate division confirming acceptance to the UCLA graduate program shortly after you get the admissions packet. Good luck everyone!

I applied for Fall 2009. According to someone who graduated from the program, they are really looking for someone who has the skills or experience to help them become a bedside nurse. I think having some clinical volunteer experience may help. I also volunteered through CCE like someone else who posted a reply, and I tried to emphasize my experience in my personal statement so I really hope that helps. I hate all the waiting, but I guess they will need all the time to go through all of the applications. If someone gets a letter please let us know! I know when it gets closer to March I'll be going crazy and will be anxiously waiting for my mail. smile.png

I applied. I talked to them today to make sure that everything was in order. They said my packet was complete and was sent out for review this week. Keeping my fingers crossed...
