I am a pre-nursing student who's path is suddenly so unsure. My mother, a 30+ year veteran RN tells me not to pursue nursing. My husband has hinted that he's prefer if I study something like business but will support me no matter what. My father is hoping I'll become a CPA and take over his business some day. I'm feeling so confused. I'm no longer sure what I want. P.S. I'm out of school for over a year now because I took time off to have a baby. I also have to think about what's best for my family. At least if I study nursing I could do so at CC and not take out loans but I don't want to disappoint anyone. HELP!!!

Do what you feel is best for you, and not what everyone else wants you to do. Ultimately, it is you that will have to live with the decisions you have made, not your mother, father, or husband.
GOOD LUCK!!!

My mom worked in a nursing home and really discouraged me from going into nursing. I did; and she couldn't be more proud. Go with your instincts. If nursing is what you want-go for it.

you have to do what you want to do. this is one time when you can't ask someone else what you should do, because you are the one who will have to go into work everyday and face your job. if nursing is your true passion, then go for it. everyone else will get on board just give them time. they don't have to live with this decision, you do. good luck!

There are many 30+ year veterans that are unhappy with nursing. Maybe she has had bad experiences or maybe, like most mother/fathers, she just wants you to have a better life than she did. The thing is nursing offers SO MUCH. You are not limited to bedside nursing if it is not something that interest you! Also, I know several people that love nursing because they can work 2 or 3 days a week while they pursue their passion, be it music or business. You may just find that nursing IS your passion. I thought that I would end up in the ER. I joined the emergency nurses association while still in nursing school, but I graduated went to ICU and I LOVE IT!!!!
Everything considered, never put anyone else's goals in place of your own. You will have more to offer your loved ones if you are happy with your life! I wish you all the best with whatever you decide.
Sincerely,
Jay

This is about YOUR life, not the people that are IN your life. If you don't go through with nursing school, you may regret it later and this will build up resentment against all the people that swayed your heart's decision. What I'm saying is, do it if this is what YOU REALLY WANT in life!

The only person you have to worry about disapointing is yourself.

what you want to do is the thing that counts. took me 12 years and 2 intervening degrees-one mama wanted, 1 hubby wanted-and then the one i wanted-33 years a nurse so far. i'm retired but it was hard, hard, hard work. and there were days i wanted to get up and walk out, slap someone silly or just quit. well as sinatra said i did it my way. that's the one that counted.

If you were at your dream job, what would it be? Working in business, working as a CPA, or working as a nurse? You are going to be in your career for a long time so you need to do what will please you, not what will please your family.
