I applied to an online RN to BSN program. I just got the letter in the mail saying I was denied. I'm so confused. I plan on calling Monday to get more information, but was looking for some input.
The letter says Unfortunately, you academic background would place you at a serious disadvantage in relation to the programs course work. It is important to realize that you may be admissible at a later date should your academic preparation improve.
I've been an RN for 6 years. I did fine in school. I don't know my exact GPA, but I had mostly had A's and B's. I did have 2 C's in the course of nursing school, but otherwise I did well. I can't imagine that would deny me entry, would it? My associates degree did not require Algebra, chemistry, speech, some of the pre-reqs that I know some require. Would they deny me admission over something like that? Their website says you have until the end of the program to complete any general education requirements that remain.
I also had to withdraw from a semester and restart the next semester due to the murder of my fiance. This was approved by the dean of my program due to the special circumstances. Would that withdraw show in my transcripts and possibly influence their decision?
I realize all of you obviously won't have the answer, as I said I intend to call Monday. I just was not expecting this at all. Hoped someone might have experienced something similar and have an opinion. Thanks!
I didn't consider Organic & Inorganic Chem, stats, calc, and research to be "fluff" classes.OP- let us know what you find out on Monday. Good luck!
Thank you. It was just an unexpected blow. I got in to the nursing program first try, never failed any classes, passed boards on the first try, and have had a great career with no major problems. So I was pretty much expecting an acceptance letter telling me when I start, lol.
Find your self another program. You have been a RN for 6 bloody years and this place doesn't require Chemistry?! Go else where. Get the best one. Sounds like "Well we can offer you our require course in basket weaving for just another $100.00. Forget these people. Apply to others. Keep running that play to you get it right.
Op, don't know if you live near that college. IF so I'd go in and meet with someone in the actual nursing dept. Often times there are things that you really need to know in order to get in. Maybe it is that the information that the school puts out there states you can do the whole thing in a short amount of time (which is a marketing ploy), but those who go through the applications in the nursing department might know that it really can't be done WELL in such a short timeframe and choose based on "other" criteria. Ignore the governing "college of biosciences" etc. Go straight to the nursing deparment and speak to an instructor.
When I say fluff I meant unnecessary. Explain to me what the need for Calc, and Stat, have anything to do with Nursing? Chemistry imo is questionable whether needed or not. You don't think some of the required classes are just a way for the college to make money? I do.
You are going to use the chem (and bio) to understand patho. Stats will be used in your research classes. Many people (I'm not one) are very shy & public speaking class has really helped them.
I didn't need any language for my BSN.
We aren't required language, either.
I have all the language and all that. I do have an ADN. It's just a regular RN to BSN program, you can complete it at your own pace. Full time, part time, whatever. It's SUNY Delhi.
I started SUNY - Delhi but quit after two classes and transferred. It was within a year after they started the online program and it may have been easier to get accepted at that point, but I did not have Statistics or Chemistry or anything other than my ADN requirements pretty much. I also quit my ADN program and went back 2 years later to finish and was still accepted. They might have a lot more applicants now and different admissions requirements, though. There are other options out there, too! Good luck!!
You've been a RN for 6yrs and didn't get entry!?! I find that bizarre. Maybe they sent the letter to the wrong person. I would be checking out different schools for sure. I'm in a BSN completion program now and dont need a foreign language. I would think if Stats were required, it would be part of the program for completion. Please keep us posted. I'm interested in knowing why after working for 6 yrs a nurse would be denied entry into a completion program.

Universities are not professional schools, i.e. their sole intent to prepare one for a career. Their purpose is to provide a broad based education with foundations in English, History, Language, Humanities or Social Sciences, etc. AD programs are usually designed primarily to prepare one for a specific career and little else.
People get a BSN for any of the following reasons:
-They are hedging their bets that more and more hospitals are requiring one.
-They hope to advance beyond bedside nursing and believe this will help them achieve that.
-They want to experience the "typical college experience," i.e. living in dorms, participating in Greek life, being involved with the sports teams, etc.
-They have a love of learning and while wanting to prepare for a career, also enjoy expanding their horizons beyond the merely professional.
I got a BSN because I had a previous B.S., which was required in my field. It would have been silly not to take advantage of my credits from this other degree.
I'm sorry you didn't get in. I would call/go in to speak with an advisor to see exactly what the problem is and talk about how you could rectify it.
Alternatively, SUNY Delhi is not the only RN-BSN program out there. There are lots of other programs available online, in-person and a combination of both. Perhaps check out some other programs to see if one is a better fit for you. If you are looking at online or hybrid, the distance learning forum here has threads on lots of programs: https://allnurses.com/distance-learning-nursing/
I get so nostalgic whenever someone mentions Delhi...I spent many summers in Delaware County :)
hmm every school I've looked at requires it.
Delhi did not require it when I attended there a few years ago and I got my BSN this year at Chamberlain and it was not required. I also looked into Plattsburgh and they did not require language. My friend is doing U of Texas-Arllington online and does not need a language either. There are plenty out there...

SUNY is competitive. Here's what Stony Brook requires:
