Denied admission for BSN program

I applied to an online RN to BSN program. I just got the letter in the mail saying I was denied. I'm so confused. I plan on calling Monday to get more information, but was looking for some input.

The letter says Unfortunately, you academic background would place you at a serious disadvantage in relation to the programs course work. It is important to realize that you may be admissible at a later date should your academic preparation improve.

I've been an RN for 6 years. I did fine in school. I don't know my exact GPA, but I had mostly had A's and B's. I did have 2 C's in the course of nursing school, but otherwise I did well. I can't imagine that would deny me entry, would it? My associates degree did not require Algebra, chemistry, speech, some of the pre-reqs that I know some require. Would they deny me admission over something like that? Their website says you have until the end of the program to complete any general education requirements that remain.

I also had to withdraw from a semester and restart the next semester due to the murder of my fiance. This was approved by the dean of my program due to the special circumstances. Would that withdraw show in my transcripts and possibly influence their decision?

I realize all of you obviously won't have the answer, as I said I intend to call Monday. I just was not expecting this at all. Hoped someone might have experienced something similar and have an opinion. Thanks!

Did you look at what classes they require you to have before beginning the RN-BSN program?

You probably just need to get some more classes under your belt before they will accept you. I wouldn't worry, just find out what classes you still need and start getting those taken care of :) I've had this happen to me when I've applied for my RN, I didn't have the Chemistry :( .

It doesn't say on the website. When I spoke with someone they said you have to be accepted into the program, then they would review the transcripts and let you know what transferred in, and what classes would still be required. From my research, Chemistry was not one of the requirements for this school. I have known that I would obviously have to complete college Algebra. I did take it, but dropped the class, even though that was like 10 years ago.

I'm hoping that is all it is, that they feel I still have to many pre-reqs to complete in addition to the BSN courses. It's not like I have that many though, I am an RN with an associates.

No, your grades sounds good. Algebra, chemistry, speech, are usually must haves. Stats as well. You'll get in after you take the required pre-reqs. Good luck with everything! :)

Bachelors degrees require a lot of fluff classes imo. Like history, public speaking, etc??? All the stuff you don't need to know to perform your job properly.

I didn't think about statistics. So even if they don't require chemistry, which I've heard, that does still leave Algebra, statistics, possibly speech. Who knows what else they require that my nursing program may not have required. So that would make sense that it's too much to complete in addition to the BSN classes. If thats the case, than that's ok. I can enroll for January and work on those classes.

Plan on needing 2 semesters of a language also, that is always a requirement I've found. Is this an accelerated program?

I didn't consider Organic & Inorganic Chem, stats, calc, and research to be "fluff" classes.

OP- let us know what you find out on Monday. Good luck!

I have all the language and all that. I do have an ADN. It's just a regular RN to BSN program, you can complete it at your own pace. Full time, part time, whatever. It's SUNY Delhi.

When I say fluff I meant unnecessary. Explain to me what the need for Calc, and Stat, have anything to do with Nursing? Chemistry imo is questionable whether needed or not. You don't think some of the required classes are just a way for the college to make money? I do.
