Denied admission for BSN program

Published

I applied to an online RN to BSN program. I just got the letter in the mail saying I was denied. I'm so confused. I plan on calling Monday to get more information, but was looking for some input.

The letter says Unfortunately, you academic background would place you at a serious disadvantage in relation to the programs course work. It is important to realize that you may be admissible at a later date should your academic preparation improve.

I've been an RN for 6 years. I did fine in school. I don't know my exact GPA, but I had mostly had A's and B's. I did have 2 C's in the course of nursing school, but otherwise I did well. I can't imagine that would deny me entry, would it? My associates degree did not require Algebra, chemistry, speech, some of the pre-reqs that I know some require. Would they deny me admission over something like that? Their website says you have until the end of the program to complete any general education requirements that remain.

I also had to withdraw from a semester and restart the next semester due to the murder of my fiance. This was approved by the dean of my program due to the special circumstances. Would that withdraw show in my transcripts and possibly influence their decision?

I realize all of you obviously won't have the answer, as I said I intend to call Monday. I just was not expecting this at all. Hoped someone might have experienced something similar and have an opinion. Thanks!

Just to clarify, I have the language classes. I'm not worried about those. I am going to call and find out on Monday what the deal is.

I understand the whole well rounded education but to be honest most the classes they require just don't apply to actually performing the job. I just don't feel I need anymore history to be able to work and function as a nurse. Language I can kind of see because we have no designated language in this country and there are a lot of people that don't speak english. I don't even mind doing the chemistry because it does apply but some stuff could definetely go.

Also remember that different state schools have additional requirements. I got my Bachelor's degree in one state but when I applied to schools in Texas for my second degree BSN, I still had to take Texas History and a couple of other core courses that were not necessary for my Business degree in Florida. The best thing to do is not panic, and call them on Monday. It's probably just a couple of courses that you can knock out before the next application deadline. Good luck!!!

I would be inclined to find another program.

I started SUNY - Delhi but quit after two classes and transferred. It was within a year after they started the online program and it may have been easier to get accepted at that point, but I did not have Statistics or Chemistry or anything other than my ADN requirements pretty much. I also quit my ADN program and went back 2 years later to finish and was still accepted. They might have a lot more applicants now and different admissions requirements, though. There are other options out there, too! Good luck!!

Did you not like the program? I have only read good things about it.

SUNY is competitive. Here's what Stony Brook requires:

Stony Brook is different than Delhi though right? That says with some on campus requirements. But I could see maybe there requirements would be the same? Delhi doesn't have it posted like that one is.

That is what I'm hoping. I can find out Monday, then I can just sign up at the local community college and knock them out in the next 2 semesters or whatever.

I will look into other programs if this is going to be a problem. I did a lot of research, and chose this school. They are supposed to be a good program and cheaper which was nice, lol

I had issues with their billing...it kept changing and everytime I called, I would go from a credit to owing them or vice versa. I think I had to call seven times to get everything fixed.

I also had a problem with just ONE instructor who made a group assignment that was due the morning that the class started. I logged on during the class preview time on a Thursday and read up on the class. No assignment was mentioned. Apparently, on Friday, that instructor posted an assignment (class was due to start on Monday) and put us in groups of four and made the assignment due Monday morning. Two of the four in my group did the assignment and I got a nasty email message from the instructor about my lack of participation when I logged in on Monday morning about 45 minutes after the assignment was due. I decided to drop and change schools. Not a BIG deal and the nursing department tried to fix things, but I felt it was best to move on because I did not want to continue in that class with that instuctor.

This all happened almost 2 years ago and the program was newer. I am sure some of the bugs have been worked out by now and would not necessarily avoid them based on my brief experience with them. I just found a better option for me based on the recommendation of some co-workers who were doing Chamberlain. I graduated from there this past summer.

Thanks! I will have to check out Chamberlain as well as some other schools. I just don't want to spend a ton of my BSN as I am still paying loans from my ASN, and want to do my NP in psych. But I think either way, if these missing classes are the problem, than I need to get them taken care of before applying anywhere else I think.

OP, I just went to SUNY's nursing page, and all the way over to the right it has a link for minimum requirements. Have you already seen that? And if so, do you meet the minimum requirements listed? This is what it said for the RN to BSN online requirements:

Admission Requirements

  • Current RN license
  • Graduation from an accredited associate degree or diploma program
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above for prerequisite credits
  • Required courses:
    - Anatomy & Physiology I & II
    - Microbiology
    - English
    - Psychology
  • A minimum of 60 semester hours from an associate degree nursing program with nursing coursework grades of "C+" or better
  • Liberal arts and science courses of "C" or better
  • Liberal arts and sciences credits for diploma graduates must be granted from collegiate institution
  • One year of experience practicing as an RN immediately preceding matriculation is recommended

I know that they're not the same school, nor the same requirements, but they are both part of SUNY. I would expect Delhi to have some pre-reqs required as well.

:)

You could try the new nursing program at Empire State College, also part of SUNY, but more flexible.

I just wanted to say sorry for your lost...
