And our governor does nothing about it. He even banned municipalities from enacting their own mandatory masks rules. I am truly terrified, even thought about leaving my job and start some travel assignments, just to get out of here.

Almost no one is wearing masks in public establishments. Restaurants and attractions are at full capacity. We had 21,000 new cases of Covid 19 yesterday alone. ?

I am not looking forward to working on a Covid unit again. I know it's about to happen, but inside of me, I don't think I have the strength to go through it again.

I am at a loss..

So there has been some movement there.

In May it was 71%, in June it was 66% and in July it was 28%??

Well, that's wonderful, I think? I mean, if you're gonna take the survey at face value? In 2 months we have gone from 71% who will never vaccinate to only 28%?

ETA: Above numbers are in reference to a post that has since been edited. ? So...disregard.

Actually, I just went back thinking that was too good to be true, and I grabbed the wrong number. There are two different questions:

Describe your personal situation regarding covid vaccination: the "will not get vaccinated" trend for all Republicans has been 33% to 30% to 28%. Improving, but slowly.

Do you plan to get vaccinated: the "no" trend for unvaccinated Republicans has been 70% to 66% to 67%.

There also hasn't been much change in "How worried are you about covid-19" where only 33% of republicans were somewhat or very worried in May, 28% in June, and 34% in July.

Politics aside it is kind of scary that only 55% of the country is "somewhat worried" about covid overall.

Thanks for the clarification.

So...I don't love talking about polls for reasons already stated. But I sort of think that the above info (to the extent it can be trusted) lends itself to what I said previously, although I could have chosen different wording than "very small."

I would put those without a "plan" to get vaccinated into my group of people I would spend my time working on, talking with, presenting facts, etc.

Those who "will not get vaccinated" are indeed a much smaller number, though perhaps not "very small." And even if we stipulate that those are the real problem people (adamantly opposed, etc.), the poll suggests that there is some mind-changing even within that group.

If we could revisit my original theory (to sum it up very generally), it is that our methods and attitudes are important because a respectable number of minds can be changed or will at least listen enough to plant a seed of doubt about the conspiracy theories themselves; that there is actual hesitancy and doubt that is not related to the more nefarious brand of vaccination refusal, and that's why it is worth maintaining composure.

I'm not going to xxx foot around a bunch of ignorant Mary Mallons who think that they have the right to simply spread disease. I maintain my composure well, I'm simply not nice to the unvaccinated...when I lose my composure I end up outside yelling at the birch trees and fireweed. People who introduce themselves to the group by spreading disinformation as they tell you why they aren't vaccinating aren't looking for information or reasons to change their mind.  This isn't a clinic...

I'm not sure where you are getting that it is a "much smaller number" of people that are adamantly opposed to vaccination, when in fact it is the majority of those left unvaccinated.

That being said, there is still a significant amount of the public undecided and planning; these are the people that need to get identified so we can focus our efforts and make a difference.

I'm not sure how to restate. I thought what I wrote was clear.

Sorry.

I have no eloquent words.  After a year and a half of this ish, I am done trying to convince anyone of the truth. Some folks prefer a lie. As a result, many people will die.

what's unacceptable to me is those at risk often are not at fault. My 4 grandchildren can't get vaccinated. My mother is super high risk d/t severe asthma. I am angry.... It STINKS!

Hold on  stop it.Leave Trump out of this otherwise you will also look misinformed and part of your own cult.Social media created the mess with their hysteria on one end and uncaring Governor Cuomo on the other refusing to protect the nursing home patients.

Nonsense.  Trump is directly responsible for much of the politicization of this pandemic, he was the Commander in Chief.  For a period of time, Trump was also one of the leading promoters of pandemic lies and misinformation. You equate holding Trump accountable as cult level crazy while elevating the actions of one governor to refocus the lens of accountability.  That's ridiculous. Trump refused to protect the nation and you are whining about a governor.

I am currently reading this book: "Nightmare Scenario - Inside the Trump's Administration Response to the Pandemic"

It is incredibly scary how he was allowed to interfere in any effective, science-based response...

A great chapter explains how he got to the suggestion that light and disinfectant would be a great avenue of research.

Are you seriously trying to make the argument that Florida is faring well right now or are you being ironic? It’s hard to tell with the jumbled text/speech if you are being facetiously Trump-like or serious.

Just curious why you think you have the authority to tell other members what they may or may not say.

Florida is the worst state by far right now btw. My state is also horrible. What we have in common are two governors with sociopathic tendencies and a sick loyalty to a no longer relevant politician who admitted to downplaying a national emergency.

I was talking with a “pro-disease” patient yesterday who lives in Florida the majority of the year; I’ve been his PCP for almost 10 years and we have a good relationship so I wanted to have an open and honest conversation with him about Delta and returning to Florida in four weeks as he has significant comorbidities.

A few things really hit me for this person I’ve known for a long time:

1. He has really been radicalized in the last 24 months. By that I mean that he gets his information only from one source (which tells him to disbelieve every other source and that anything objective is fake), believes that there is a vast international conspiracy, and that he is unable to think rationally because rational thought is most often contradictory to his new doctrine.

2. He believes covid is real and serious (has seen friends die) but also that it’s numbers are exaggerated and that delta is a ploy for the 2022 and 2024 election cycle.

3. He genuinely believes that vaccinations and masks are an assault on his freedom that he is willing to fight and die for.

So I changed tactics and instead talked about vaccines in the light of something that is important to him: taxes and the economy. I showed him the math of the situation in Florida right now: 10,398 people hospitalized with covid at an average cost of $64,500 per hospital stay makes a current cost of $671 million dollars. That money is coming out of our pockets one way or another. He was skeptical about the numbers (even after I told him they came straight from DeSantis) but the argument made more sense to him then a healthcare argument.

Sadly this is may be the only effective argument for the deep red citizens. I've found that above all else far right citizens are capitalist first and foremost. Capitalist before they are christian, monongomist, parents, patriots, etc,.
