CSULA Fall 2016 Nursing (BSN)

Updated:   Published

I realize it may be early, but I wanted to start a thread for the CSULA Fall 2016 nursing program hopefuls. I'm sure we will all have a lot of questions, especially because of the upcoming semester conversion. I have plenty of questions about application deadlines, volunteer hours, TEAS, etc. It will be nice to have a community where we can ask each other questions and offer advice. Eventually we can share stats, and we may even end up in the same cohort!

Hey you guys!

I'll be applying for Fall 2016 as well and i'm nervous as hell Dx You're all planning to apply to other schools right?

I'm planning to apply to other schools also but they don't accept "in progress" classes. I need to take microbiology but that's only offered during Spring quarter which is when applications are due for schools like CSULB and CSUSJ. I really should have taken summer classes (such poor planning ughhhh)

Are all of you finished with your pre-reqs?

I'm in the same position as you! I will have micro in progress in spring. I should've started my sciences sooner, but I did other classes first. Like you said, poor planning :( So I won't be able to apply for CSULB yet. ? For now I'm going to apply to CSULA and CSUSB. I started a thread for CSUSB fall 2016 as well. Right now I'm in an accelerated (6-week) anatomy class, and it's hard! I can't wait to be done with pre-reqs!

I am very interested in the ADN program that you mentioned about, can you give me a little more detail about how it works?? Thank you so much!!!

I'm supposed to start my volunteering at Kaiser within the next few weeks. Supposedly I will be in a nursing unit after 12 weeks of customer service type of volunteering, so hopefully I will learn something! I'm doing my pre-reqs at Citrus College ? I have a question, do you know how many chemistry units we need? @premillenium

Oh my God! I'm so sorry for the really late reply (2 months late). I forgot my password lol!

The credits don't matter as long as you take a class equivalent to Chem 151 in CSULA. Assist.org is a very useful tool for this. I looked up the equivalent classes from Citrus to CSULA and you can take Chem 103 and it will be counted to your application ?

I don't think you have to be finished with the pre-reqs by fall. That will be great if you are, though! I was pretty sure CSULA only requires the TEAS scores for math and English. I will have to double check! ? I'm so anxious to start applying. I don't know when to do the TEAS, though ? December is too late?

Just to clarify with you: CSULA SON only counts English, speech, critical thinking, chemistry, anatomy and physiology for prereq. You do need to finish micro and stats before spring though, but they won't count it to your applications.

As for the TEAS scores, they're only counting English and Reading. They just want you to pass Math and Science for your application to be processed.

What's a "passing" score for math and science? ?

You have to be in the national 40 percentile. The national 50 percentile in Science was about 60% last year, and Math was lower, like 50% I think. I'm estimating.

Hello I will also be applying to csula but for 2017 I had a question about the volunteering. What type of duties does csula look at from a volunteer so far all I have being doing is customer service so like helping people in the hospital find a patient giving directions running errands like getting lunch bags for the recovery room I'm mostly in the front desk of the hospital escorting people and also answering brief questions to people . I volunteer at kaiser permanente south bay! Anyone please answer I really want to make my volunteer hours worth it

You need patient-related volunteer experience. For instance, I volunteer at a rehabilitation hospital, and I go into the patients' rooms to ask them if they want to participate in recreational activities, I bring them lunch, clear their lunch trays, ask patients if I can bring them anything, I offer companionship such as bedside reading, etc. From your description, it appears that you are doing clerical work. You need to be able to relate to the patients somehow, even if it's just bringing them a lunch menu. I would speak to your supervisor and tell them that you're applying to nursing school and you need "patient - related" experience.

I did but she says that what i'm doing is patient related because i am interacting with people and helping out ?

In my opinion, you should do more patient-related volunteer work since you WILL have to do that during Nursing school so might as well get as much hands-on experience as you can before you start. I personally know the bedside manners now because of it.

Its already September yet there is still nothing on the website :dead: anyways what your guys's option if you don't get into the programs?:/
