am i crazy?

I was just wondering if others think i am crazy for making the following decision.

I was offered a job as Director of maternal child unit at another local hospital about 10 minutes further away from my house than current hospital, pay was approx 10,000 more a year, working 5 days a week, supposedly flexible hours, but on call almost all the time. benefits were about the same.

I decide to stay where I am at because i enjoy what i do and where I work, I have been in management positions before and did not really enjoy it. friends and family think i am crazy to have turned it down.

but my thinking is, It's not all about money to me. I prefer to be happy and enjoy what i do. and to work with and for people I like. besides I love caring for my patients and am sure i would miss that badly.

I think it is most important to be happy where you work. Its not worth being in a job if you're miserable (and I know.) I think if more people kept this in mind, work would be more pleasant all around.

(I hope this makes sense, I'm not awake yet :) )

I think you made the right decision. I HAVE had a job where I absolutely dreaded walking in everyday, and no amount of money in the world would ever had made me happy there. If you're happy where you are, you should stay. :)

OHHH Mark you think like me. Before I even finished your note, I said

"don't do it!!!"

Knowing your love of bedside nursing with a personal touch and your personal commitment to your family, I felt like you would regret it!!! Oh, the headaches of management--- and 10K is not enough to cover it for ME anyhow.....

So as you may guess, I am ITA with your decision. (not that it matters; it's your life, not mine). To me, at least, it appears you did the right thing.

I could never leave the bedside! I'll never do managenment! I don't even want to do charge. To much administrative bull. Good for you Mark! Do what you love!

Nope you're not crazy at all. You're honest with yourself and you know what you love, and you're lucky to be doing it. Sounds pretty sane to me. :)

Nope you aren't crazy. Very courageous in fact. It takes guts to stand up and say "No. I don't want to do that". Too many times people who are non-nurses don't seem to understand those of us who are content to remain primary bedside caregivers. They are stuck on societys image of having to move up the ladder to be/feel successfull. Nursing just isn't like that. Great for you. You have my support for what it's worth.

I definitely think you did the right thing in my opinion. I am not a nurse yet but I don't think I could leave bedside nursing for management unless I physically couldn't do it anymore. For me, it is all about hands on care for the patients. Take pride in your decision because I definitely think it was the right one !!

You are not crazy! to some people money is everything, to some it means more than being in a comfterble position. You made the right choice:)

Yup, the right thing-and money is not all it. The older I get, the less important it is. Have cut back on a bunch of stuff, and am not out to keep up with anyone in the "buy things" competition. Refuse to stress myself out to the max for money anymore. Sounds like you made the decision that you can live with long-term. Good for you!!!
