  1. How many 40+ nurses still working Med/Surg?

I'm 54-do three 8 hour night shifts a week. Once in a while will pick up an extra day. Still doing OK with this, but I think full time would be nasty. However, have to tell you that I do work with some one who is older then I am, and she does full...
  2. Nurse/patient ratios

Illinois-med/surg-heavy on the med, with stable vents in the mix some of the time. 11P-7A, with 7-9 patients. 2 CNA's with 10-14 patients each. This is a big improvement from the last few years when we had 9-11 each on the night shift.
  3. Just how many nurses from IL do we have here at allnurses?

    Here-Chicago burbs, south.
  4. Effexor for this???

Oh yes, the boob rash thing. Have found Tinactin anti-fungal cream works great for me. Advertised for "jock itch" but the label states that the only places it is not effective is on scalp or nails.
  5. Introductions

Chicago suburbs-south. Midlife career change to RN at the age of 49.

  7. Anybody work as a unit sec'y while in school?

I worked as a unit secretary while in school-found it VERY helpful. Got used to reading orders, how charts go together, learned all the paperwork. I feel it was extremely valuable experience. Also knew where all the supplies were, since I had to o...
  8. My daughter got a letter the other day-her OB/GYN is closing his practice due to the cost of malpractice insurance. I'm sure there will be many more.
  9. am i crazy?

Yup, the right thing-and money is not all it. The older I get, the less important it is. Have cut back on a bunch of stuff, and am not out to keep up with anyone in the "buy things" competition. Refuse to stress myself out to the max for money any...
  10. Drs. handwriting - Can you read it well?

Our patient's rights info packet that we are giving to folks upon admission to our facility includes a paragraph about doc's writing. Tells people that if they can't read the script a doc gives them, they should demand a new one. Should be interest...
  11. Feeling threatened by your patients

Medical floor-guy in DT's and a doc who doesn't medicate for that. 1 RN and 3 security guards injured in the free for all. Yeah, I feel threatened.
  12. Had 'em, dumped'em. Too heavy , broke all the time, hated by the staff. Don't these hospital administrators ever talk to each other to find out what does and does not work before they spend big bucks on DUMB STUFF!?!?!?
  13. Part Time RN's

Chicago-all kinds of hours at all kinds of hospitals-full time, part time-8's, 12's, weekends only. Big variety of offers, including in-house per diem at a lot of places.
  14. What are your differentials:

Eves-10% Nights-15% Charge $1 No weekend diff. Extra shift bonus-$9.
  15. Has a pt given you a chuckle lately?

80 year old Altziemer's lady. retired RN. She could undo any restraint, take apart any IV, hide pills-and proudly tell you, "I'm a nurse and I know all about this stuff." She was made us laugh and scared us a few times too!
