Artificial feeding-Terri Schiavo
I Believe I mentioned that thought myself a few days (or nights ago!) He was married to her and presumably knew her wishes and spouses quite often know things about their in-laws that the in-laws don't want them to know. It could very well be that Terri had issues with her parents and didn't want them to know of her wishes. Unfortunatley we will never know. Sad and so very tragic.

Advice needed - Should he be fired?
I have been in your shoes. You need to contact your DON and your HR supervisor and request a meeting and have all of your documentation ready. Present it to them and then follow their recomendations. My guess will be a suspension as from reading your post that sounds like the next step. Then, if his behaviour continues you will have the documentation to terminate him. A side note, please make sure that you can provide documentation that you track all of your staffs time and attendance the same way in case he tries to come back with a lawsuit. I used to keep a notebook and each payroll, filled in everyone's tardy's etc. Good luck to you. Sounds like you really are doing a great job. Keep up the good work. PS: As a manager of a short staffed unit you will get lots of opportunity to work staff and increase your knowledge and skills base! :)

Artificial feeding-Terri Schiavo
Doesn't the government interfere enough in our lives already? If Terri didn't want her husband to speak for her she should have had a power of attny stating that her parents were to make decisions for her. I too have to wonder why he hasn't divorced her and married his new woman, the mother of his children, but perhaps he does it for the better of Teri. We don't know what kind of relationship she had with her parents prior to her heart attack, nore do we know what kind of relationship she had with her husband. Perhaps he truely does feel that he is acting in her best interests. A question to which none of us will ever know the true answer. I hope this tragic case becomes an example to others the importance of living wills and powers of attnys. Take the burden away from your loved ones. Make it easier for them. Have it spelled out on paper. If you start to feel better and can communicate somehow, you can always change your wishes. All this removal and reinsertion of the feeding tubes cannot be good for her either. It's a truely tragic situation no matter how you look at it. The one person who is suffering the most can no longer speak for herself. It's time to let the one person the law dictated years ago (long before this case came to be) who has the power to make the decisions to decide what is best for his wife. In my humble opinion that is.

Full Time Night Shift
I did total nights for 6 years and loved it. I however worked 7 12 hour nights in a row and then was off for 7 days/nights in a row. It was awsome. Personally I can't imagine working nights any other way!!!!!! Best of luck to you. Iggy. :)

Addendum to BEWARE!
Debbie: I am curious as to which agency you are with. I'm thinking about traveling and would like to know who is great and who is not so great. If you don't want to post the name of the agency (Which I can understand) then please e-mail me. Thanks, Iggy. :)

Baby wipes?
My baby is 2 months old and there were wet wipes in the baby cart but they were some generic brand...but they didn't have a scent to them and were gentle. When we got home I used the huggies newborn and really liked them...very gentle and alcohol/fragrence free. :)

Gross bodily functions driving me crazy
Definately go and see your doctor...I have IBS and it is treatable, but only a doc can diagnose it. A few things that can help until you see one are to avoid caffiene!!!!!!!!!!!! That is a major major agrevator. I can sympathize with the cramps. They can be worse than labour pains.

Hi there. I don't know the answer to your question but I do have a suggestion. Call your local pharmacy (Eckards etc.) and ask to speak to the pharmacist. I also strongly encourage you to be upfront with your doctor. He won't judge you and may be able to offer you some tests to determine if there are any defects. Best of luck to you and keep us posted.

Geodon-----underdosing?
I have no use for PO Geodon as I have never seen it work...even in high doses. Never knew it came in IM. Would be curious to see how that would work with my patients.

7 on 7 off schedule
Dave, I have to agree with you. I did 7 on 7 off 12 hour shifts for 81/2 years and LOVED IT! I took an interim postion that changed my schedule to a Monday to Friday 8a-5p. I HATE it. I'm getting ready to go back to my 7 on 7 off schedule again. I have done it on both days and nights. I find I am more tired doing the M-F shift. Also, I don't have enough time to get things done or go and see family and friends. Our whole hospital is the 7 on 7 off with 12 hour shifts and there is very little complaint, and no more errors than a comparable hospital that doesn't staff that way. It's all in how you set your mind. For us day 6 we were more tired than any other day in the rotation, but by shift 7, look out. You couldn't stop us. We were super nurse. Bring it on. You only had 12 hours and counting left and then it was like being on vaccation for 7 whole days. We are all entitled to our opinions and likes and dislikes, but until you've given the schedule a good try, (at a minimum 3 rotations of working), you really can't judge weither it is more dangerous or not.

Fun THings to Do at Work
Pot luck once a month or so is a great morale booster. Costs virtually nothing and when you get your senior leadership for your department to participate it's great. A very relaxed time for all. Also, we have a Christmas party outside the hospital and try to staff our small unit with mostly PRN staff for that shift. Any left over food is taken to the hospital. We have added a summer party as well, and it was such a hit we are talking about having one in the fall.
