Craziest PDN/PDN Venting Thread

Specialties Private Duty

Published

I looked in here, and other places, and didn't see a sole thread dedicated to the madness that is PDN. As PDN's we go through... Well, a variety of experiences. Let's just say we could write one heck of a book.

So this thread is for:

1. Your wildest, craziest, saddest, happiest, most psycho private duty nursing/homecare stories (Pedi or Adults)

2. Venting about frustrating parents, cases, patients, etc

3. Advice on "should I stay in this case VS that one, etc."

I hope lots of people participate, I feel this is going to be helpful.... We can feel isolated out there in the field. I personally love sharing stories with other nurses. I'll go first, but I'll wait til I get home and can really type out some doozies. :)

Happy story telling :)

My agency's office staff was reluctant with the gloves. A simple reminder that under OSHA regulations my employer is REQUIRED to provide me with PPE if contact with blood or body fluids is expected. Failure to do so is a violation that is reportable to OSHA.

Same with my one agency (regional multi state) but it turned out to be one misguided staff members misinterpretation/misunderstanding of the law.

Used to work for an 'unusual' family whose father used to complain about the rate of toilet paper consumption in the downstairs (nurses') bathroom. And mom didn't like it when you brought coffee to work (on the night shift) because she didn't like the smell of it.

At my last case the PCG required us nurses to bring our own toilet paper.

Doesn't like the smell of coffee on the night shift? Oh my dear goodness gracious.

I had a mom who was otherwise very nice and gracious, but would not allow us to use the microwave. Apparently a nurse used it for popcorn and it burned. Don't know why she could just say "no popcorn", but it's her house...

I already carry my own hand soap and wet wipes, but I draw the line at towels.

I'm cognizant of what familial financial situation that I may be entering into; I rather have my supplies and not expect any, um, surprises.

My client does not have paper towels available, nor gloves, for that matter. She keeps telling me that the last nurse brought her own. Of course that makes me wrong when I tell her it is not my responsibility to buy her supplies.

My agency will supply the gloves and soap if the client does not.

With the experiences I've had this winter (and in light of a co-worker's broken wrist) I think I'm going to suggest to our agency that they start distributing salt or ice-melt to our clients, along with the gloves and soap that they already provide.

That's a great idea! But I can see some being too lazy to use it. I guess we could clear the path for the next nurse if the family won't.

Oh my goodness, my patients father said the same thing. I was shocked, at first I thought it was me. Did I look dishonest? Do I have jail time fraud etc stamped on my face. What good is a paycheck like that if its your last. I am so glad I am with like minded people on this board. And of course he added I do it for all the nurses. As if.....

Haha, please, I've oriented with some nurses who gove me the impression they wouldn't think twice about taking an offer like that, unfortunately.

TMI but right at this moment I am not pooping even though I would like to, because the toilet here is too unreliable. :((( 8 hours to go...
