Craziest PDN/PDN Venting Thread

I looked in here, and other places, and didn't see a sole thread dedicated to the madness that is PDN. As PDN's we go through... Well, a variety of experiences. Let's just say we could write one heck of a book.

So this thread is for:

1. Your wildest, craziest, saddest, happiest, most psycho private duty nursing/homecare stories (Pedi or Adults)

2. Venting about frustrating parents, cases, patients, etc

3. Advice on "should I stay in this case VS that one, etc."

I hope lots of people participate, I feel this is going to be helpful.... We can feel isolated out there in the field. I personally love sharing stories with other nurses. I'll go first, but I'll wait til I get home and can really type out some doozies. :)

Happy story telling :)

So this just happened... My patient's father just told me if I ever need to call out, just let him know and he will still sign my time sheet (we use paper time sheets in homes with no land line) if I needed the money.

Umm. NO! Lol. Generous I suppose, but can you say Medicare/Medicaid fraud!??!

And he may be happy to use that against you if he ever gets mad about something.

At another case I saw a note/ sign on the wall that said:

"Many of the nurses like to keep busy by emptying the dish washer, dusting, wiping the table and counters, running the vacuum, doing any of the laundry in the laundry room and general cleaning. Any of this that you do is appreciated."

I don't believe the Mom that the nurses like to do that because her carpets look like they haven't been vacuumed since the house was built. The house is a total disaster. Mom doesn't want anyone wearing shoes inside, her pets poop and pee on the floor, how much dirtier could shoes make it? Ha ha ha

Gross! So you're supposed to walk around and get your socks so filthy you have to burn them.

This nurse does not do housework. Nope...sorry...not happening.

I have had so many parents say this. I try to explain that this, in fact, is not allowed and they look at me with big doe eyes like, "It's not?!"

Oh my goodness, my patients father said the same thing. I was shocked, at first I thought it was me. Did I look dishonest? Do I have jail time fraud etc stamped on my face. What good is a paycheck like that if its your last. I am so glad I am with like minded people on this board. And of course he added I do it for all the nurses. As if.....

I have had only one PDN case and have no stories like these- it makes me feel grateful to have the case, even if they have been labeled "difficult" and "challenging" by other nurses, as well as the agency. I remember one time I was changing my client's diaper, was up to my elbows in watery stool and was on my third wipe, and the mom says, "OMG you're using a lot of wipes!" Really?? The kid was under a desk (he's a teen) and I'm contorting myself into a pretzel to clean him up, doing the best I can, and she's sweatin' me on the wipes. I was thinking, 'don't sweat the small stuff, lady- sheesh!'

I can't hold a candle to some of these stories, but I'd still like to share. My patient's father is unemployed, home all day, and has no idea what to do with himself. Pt stays in common areas. He:

walks past pt and I every 10 minutes, stares for a moment, walks away mumbling

is constantly clearing his throat or hmm-hmm-ing, speaks little

if he wants to say something, will stand and stare until you make eye contact

laughs at nothing in particular then acts like he wants to be asked what is funny (I don't oblige)

hangs around the pt, takes a breath like he wants to say something, then doesn't

will fish the smallest recyclables out of the trash and point out that they should be recycled(tiny boxes, etc)

that is all for now.

Many, many years ago I worked a case in another city - toddler vent patient. Dad was schizophrenic/ scary. One night, he came home from his 3-11 shift and was pizzed by some dishes in the sink. (Five total kids in the house including a newborn) So, he proceeded to open a can of Hershey's Syrup and walk all of the house dripping it out on the furniture, carpet etc so the wife would have to clean it up in the morning. He forbid me to clean it up - no worries there, I literally locked myself in said toddler's bedroom until morning.

I eventually moved out of state, but last I heard- she was living in a homeless shelter with all five kids to escape him.

Just last night, I was walking up the sidewalk to a client's front door, and I slipped and fell on some ice. I fell on my knee and couldn't get up right away. The mom opened the door, and proceeded to argue with me that it wasn't slippery because she had put down enough kitty litter. I was still on the ground and thinking, "What, are you saying I didn't just slip and fall? Am I a liar here?" She even chuckled a bit. I limped into the house and she kept explaining that she made sure the ice was covered. I was just sputtering, "Well, I went down, so apparently there's still some out there." I wasn't badly hurt, but she didn't know that, because she gave a brief report and took off upstairs. No offer of an icepack or asking if I was ok. This was just the latest in this mom's indifference/nastiness/rudeness I've experienced for 14 months, once a week. I think it's time for me to find a new client for Sunday night. This was the last straw.

Last year my school went to the nursing tribunal? I think that's what it's called when you watch cases on nurses in front of the board. Any who, a nurse was VERY close to getting her licensed revoked for something similar. She was forging her patients signature to get paid. One of the board members said to just have her pay a fine. Another member wanted it to be revoked. Saying it was fraud. The others disagreed. She was very lucky. And she didn't even show up to her hearing.
