I looked in here, and other places, and didn't see a sole thread dedicated to the madness that is PDN. As PDN's we go through... Well, a variety of experiences. Let's just say we could write one heck of a book.
So this thread is for:
1. Your wildest, craziest, saddest, happiest, most psycho private duty nursing/homecare stories (Pedi or Adults)
2. Venting about frustrating parents, cases, patients, etc
3. Advice on "should I stay in this case VS that one, etc."
I hope lots of people participate, I feel this is going to be helpful.... We can feel isolated out there in the field. I personally love sharing stories with other nurses. I'll go first, but I'll wait til I get home and can really type out some doozies. :)
Happy story telling :)

Well, I have only had one pdn case so far, and I am afraid it has spoiled me. I dearly love the family and the child I work for. They treat me like family and have been nothing but kind to me.
And they are normal people. They live in a nice home. No craziness, no hostility, no insane expectations.
I am honestly dreading when this case ends. The horror stories I always read about have me a little nervous about the next case!
As far as the child I work for, they were expecting him to have serious neuro issues due to brain damage from an extended resuscitation in the hospital.
I can say, it is a joy seeing him progress as he has. The family and I celebrate each precious milestone. There are delays and issues, but he is doing better anyone expected, and it makes me so happy.

I'm so happy you have a good case! I'd love to see some more responses in here!
One mom told me she had a nurse come that told her a crazy story from her other case. She wasn't allowed to use the toilet at this house. She asked what the parents wanted her to do for the 8 hour shift and they suggested either holding it or wearing adult diapers during her shift. She called the agency and the didn't back her up! Shockingly, that's not the first time I've heard of that happening.

Wha....?
I don't think so!
What could possibly be the rationale for not allowing someone to use the restroom?

Isolation IS a drawback to PDN, but Allnurses.com is the answer! I come here and get support, answered to specific question, and lots of good laughs.

She should've gone out for a big Indian curry meal the night before her shift, then followed the advice to diaper up... walking around with post-colonic curry in the ol' diaper would get her a nice invite to use the toilet I bet!
I just ignore such rules. It seems like a game of chicken to me.
Positive things have been coming my way lately. A dad called me Mary Poppins. A family let me use their Kurig all I wanted. Another family served me a steak dinner to enjoy during " down time". And a little boy kissed me.
:-)

Now I would be all over that!!
The family I work with doesn't drink coffee! Can you imagine?! They did, however, grant me access to their fridge full of beverages in the garage. I've always been too shy to take them up on it, but it was a kind gesture!
I bought a super insulated stainless steel mug that keeps my coffee from home piping hot, but I would love some nice fresh coffee about 2 am...

A steak dinner AND unlimited access to A Keurig?!?! Are you sure you didn't die and go to PDN Heaven?!?!
LOL!!!!!
