Coworkers Opening Patient Windows During Inclement Weather

Published

What would you do if you had a colleague that opened patients’ room windows during inclement weather? For example , the other day it was quite cold, cloudy and rainy and someone had opened up all the windows on one unit.  A similar happening occurred during Winter when it was very snowy out.  In both instances, some of the rooms got very cold, almost to the point of being freezing.  What would you do about a colleague who does things such as this?  In our case, we don’t know who is responsible (yet) but wondering about the best approach should their identity become known

Getting back to the topic of open windows, all of the psych units at Wrongway Regional Medical Center were hermetically sealed. Back in the late 90's, a few years before Wrongway became a for-profit hospital, I visited there as a PAS agent.

I noted that the geriatric psych unit day room, which was called a solarium in those days, had windows which opened. And the unit was on the third floor. I remember thinking how easily an individual could jump out of one of the windows.

Over a year after I became employed by Wrongway, a geriatric patient did jump out of the windows, suffering fractures. Hence, the hermetically sealed units.

But my threads aren't quite as provocative as SB's. Guess I had a milquetoast career.

I don't care to start any. I'm busy at work. Just read and reply on breaks

With all due love & respect, Hoosier, "I'm busy" is  a cop-out. It takes no more time to start a thread than it does to submit a post.

With threads you can also "just read and reply on breaks".

All actions are inspired by one of two emotions: love or fear, and that means you don't start threads because you fear something.

Therewith is my premise and I will prove that premise despite submissions to the contrary.

With a reply, I think about it for a couple of seconds, reply, move on. To post a thoughtful post requires my attention to topic and message.

I read premise 3 times and swore it said demise. Too many hours lately...

Well, amoLucia, why don't you come up with a topic and start a thread so others may criticize?

Put your money, as they say, amoLucia, where your mouth is!

Whoa, Davey Do! What’s up? The following is just my perception and others may not agree. When I read these posts of yours, you sound so defensive of SilverBells that you almost come off as aggressive. What’s this thing about starting threads? Do only posters who are prolific thread-starters have a right to voice an opinion or be critical? I can’t speak for amoLucia but I don’t think she deserved this.

It makes one wonder if some members have anything better to do than read, respond to, and berate SilverBells' threads and posts.

Yet they keep coming back, like moths to a flame.

Oh, it's easy to critique others and take potshots from he sidelines in the heat of the lunch hour rush, but very few, like SiverBells, submit threads which are entertaining and receive so much attention! SilverBells' threads liven things up!

Yes, intrigue, SilverBells, but it has more to do with self esteem. If we can find fault with another, we are telling ourselves and others that we are not like them; we are okay.

Unto them, verily I say, "You are right and I am wrong. You are good and I am bad".

One will use any scapegoat one can find in order to elevate one's low self esteem, SiverBells.

This analysis of yours that anyone who voices criticism of OP’s posts suffer from low self-esteem seems to stem from a desire to chastise posters and ”put them in their place”. Am I misunderstanding your motivation for posting this?

I think that many of OP’s threads are designed to stir emotions and it seems disingenuous to become upset when they inevitably do. Well OP appears supremely unfrazzled, but you are like his knight in shining armor galopping to his defense. I did remark in another one of these threads that yours and OP’s relationship seems very symbiotic. I stand by that assessment. Wherever SilverBells is, there you are.

Like most threads on here, the ones that continue on for five, ten pages or more are those that stir emotions and contain some element of controversy or expression of opposing opinions. Without that they tend to fade into oblivion rather quickly.

I honestly don’t think that OP would be happy with a couple of lukewarm replies and then see the thread disappear out of sight. Do you Davey? Or OP?

It’s the drama that keeps it alive. I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect to be able to dictate exactly what flavor of drama one will receive when one posts something on the world wide interwebs...

Back to the topic at hand. As another poster has already mentioned, Florence Nightingale was a fan of fresh air. This is from memory so it might be off by a word or two, but in her 1859 book ”Notes on Nursing” she wrote something along the lines of cleanliness and fresh air from open windows with unremitting attention to the patient are the only defense a true nurse either asks or need.

So OP, you need to be on the lookout for either a Nightingale disciple. Or a Scandinavian. It’s one of the two ?

I can’t, for some reason. So I’m stuck with responding to what others think is important.

?

I always sleep with an open window, even when it’s -20C (-4F) but darn, I hate mosquitos. Thankfully they’ve invented window ? nets so that I can get my fix of fresh air ?

It wasn’t me who had an opinion on people starting, or not starting , threads ? Anyway that’s a pity, because I think you’re a gifted writer. I’d enjoy reading one of your threads.

Sorry for the misattribution- that’s the way it quoted for me. Sigh.
Thanks for the kind words. Mostly in the past now, though. ?
