Coworker talking on cell phone while counting narcs!

Specializes in LTC.

Long story short...

I go to count narcs with another nurse amd she starts talking on her cell... while I'm trying to count. I asked her to either hang it up or call me when she's done on the phone and next thing I know I'm getting cursed out.

I don't get it. Am I the only one that think its unprofessional, rude, and careless to talk on a ceell phone while counting narcs with another nurse?,,

Whew, feel so much better getting that off my chest.

Sorry about the typo's. I promise you I got A's in college english, just never shows when I'm typing...

You were not out of line, she was. And she knows it.

I would have said the same exact thing and probably in a not so nice way. Kudos to you, thats just careless, and what the count got messed up got forbid?

I would refuse to count until she got off the phone.

If she didn't hang up the phone, I would have stopped the narc count and walked out. She can come get me when she's done.

I would refuse too. She should be counting and that's it. She would be the first one to complain if she found the count off later and try to blame it on you.

Personal cell phones are banned anywhere in our hospital while working. People can use them on breaks away from patient areas. We are not even allowed to have our phones in our pockets. My phone was always on my person on vibrate in case my loved one who has severe medical problems had an emergency. Now I have to make sure he knows which floor I am working on and what the number to the nursing station is.

Just goes to show how a few inconsiderate people ruined it for all.

I agree; it's unprofessional, rude, and careless. Furthermore, if she had cursed at ME, I'd nOT have been very kind in return but I sure wouldn't have cursed at her. THEN, I'd have written her a$$ets up and then probably dealt with her outside work too! I have no patience for that crap. A narc count is usually a quick task; it doesn't need to be complicated by such idiocy as a cell phone.

I would say fair punishment would be to chop off an ear!

Sorry couldn't help myself;)

Holy crap! If someone did that at my facility they'd be out on their @$$ faster than you could say, "I'm at work, I'll call you back on my break."

If I remember correctly, talking on a cellfone or attending to other personal matters while on work is strictly prohibited on any job. Most especially in a job where life may be at stake. You can inform your superior about this coworker's attitude. Or better yet, tell your coworker about his/her conduct first. Remind him/her that it's "unprofessional".
