Got any ideas? We are supposed to submit a list to our nurse manager, and I'm not aware of anything. Thanks.
which 'boogie suckers' are you guys referring to? bbgs? (nicknamed baby booger grabbers at our nicu) love them.i don't remember the name of it, but one of our education people was talking about something they had seen at a conference recently that was amazing. it was like a gel-ish type mattress that could keep its shape, so you could literally tuck it under babies for prone positioning and nesting and not needing anything else for developmental positioning. apparently it's not any more expensive than our current developmental pack with frogs and bendys and stuff.
we use bbgs too, but recently started testing out another type. what you describe sounds somewhat like the prone positioner, we still use other developmental positional items as well. i usually put the prone positioner in a snuggle up and place the baby on it, i then put a bendy bumper around the baby, with the bend being at the babies head so the baby is nice and snug. they just look so cozy when they are positioned like that. i have a memory foam matress and i sleep so well on it, i love that the prone positioner is made of the memory foam too, it is so comfortable. here is a picture of the prone positioner.http://proneplus.respironics.com/images/enlarge_proneplus.jpg
we are also testing a new sort of wipe. it is a dry, but soft wipe that you wet and wash the baby with. i love using it for babies with diaper rash, it is much softer than washclothes, cloth diapers, or gauze.

I love those nasal aspirators! We use them all the time in our unit. Great for those kids that seem to get a lot of upper airway congestion from being on cannulas... It's always "fun" to get a booger so big that it clogs up the end up the aspirator! We re-use them (rinsing w/ sterile water inbetween uses) for a few days or so, dependong on how much they get used for each baby.
My unit has implemented a new policy that states we are not supposed to place the "boogie suckers" as I see they are being called into the babies nares as it can "cause nasal trauma and bleeding, particularly if the suction is set too high" I have tried this new practice and find it just does not work. Could you share with me the practices that your hospitals use, and any research please. And if I am posting in the wrong site I apologize and could you direct me to an appropriate thread.
The company that makes the fluidized neonatal positioners is called Sundance Enterprises. It is called Baby Z-Flo. Greatest thing since sliced bread.:)
I have a problem with these matresses in that you cannot x ray through them. A real PITA if you have an unstable kid that needs frequent films which is a shame since those are the kids that need the matresses the most.
We are using the z-flow pillows/mattresses and enjoy them. They do get air pockets in them, I think it's because the outside plastic layer stretches a little. This is a trick I've learned. And I didn't check to see if it's ok, as I've heard said many times it's much easier to get forgiveness than permission.
So, it you have significant air pockets, manipulate the big air pockets all together, make a tiny cut with scissors, push the air out taking care not to expel the foamy stuff that's supposed to be inside. Then apply a tegaderm as a patch. I usually cut the tegaderm in half and apply two layers on the cut spot, haven't had any leak.
