Cool new products in the NICU

Got any ideas? We are supposed to submit a list to our nurse manager, and I'm not aware of anything. Thanks.

We are using the z-flow pillows/mattresses and enjoy them. They do get air pockets in them, I think it's because the outside plastic layer stretches a little. This is a trick I've learned. And I didn't check to see if it's ok, as I've heard said many times it's much easier to get forgiveness than permission.

So, it you have significant air pockets, manipulate the big air pockets all together, make a tiny cut with scissors, push the air out taking care not to expel the foamy stuff that's supposed to be inside. Then apply a tegaderm as a patch. I usually cut the tegaderm in half and apply two layers on the cut spot, haven't had any leak.

Radiology still will not shoot an xray if a kid is on one of them....

I have a problem with how huge they are and how much room they take up inside the isolette. Especially with micros, they end up looking like they're perched on a table. I can get much better developmental positioning with the small gel pad and blanket rolls.

I'm liking the new mixed venous SvO2 buccal/cerebral sat monitors we've been using on our pre and postop cardiacs. They're great for making treatment decisions based on cerebral saturations....

We have lots of success with Neosuckers.

Literature says X rays can be taken by lifting baby and placing plate directly on z-flo.

Right, but you still have to lift the baby. You can't use the drawer in the Giraffes or radiant warmers. And on a folded blanket bed, you can often sort of slip the plate underneath the kid without fully lifting him off the bed. Our worst was the first kid we got a Zflo for, actually. Osteogenesis imperfecta. So needs lots of Xrays, on a Zflo, and tricky to pick up and put down. Baaaad combo.

Who makes Neoprep? Googled it but came up with nothing.

FINALLY we are getting TransWarmers for the unit I'm in now..... #4 NICU in the nation, and NO ONE has heard of them.

It took some arm-twisting to get 'em, too. Makes me miss my old unit and the care we gave there even more.
