Convicted of murder as a teen and now a nurse

Published

I know of someone who was convicted of murder as a teen. I won't go into details because the case is somewhat famous due to the fact there was a made-for-tv movie. The person in question did their time and is now in their 40's and is a RN. They legally changed their name but because some website had this information posted the new name has been discovered.

My question is how does someone who has a murder conviction become an RN. I know that the person was tried as a juvenile and sentenced as one but don't they have to disclose this information to the BON?

Is this person a good nurse now? Why do you know or care what she did as a teenager. There is this new word I've been hearing about called forgiveness. Maybe you should look it up? WWJD?

To be honest, I don't think Jesus would be thrilled over the murder.

If it was justified self-defense then the individual would not have been convicted. I don't know how an individual is still permitted to be a nurse after a murder conviction, but they should not be. Regardless of age, or what-if scenario, when you are convicted of murder you should not be permitted to practice as a nurse. Call me old-fashioned, but I would not want a convicted murderer working along side me in the hospital or taking care of me or my family.

I agree. I'm sure people with lesser crimes have not fared as well.

No, but he would forgive.

Specializes in ICU/PACU.

Does the movie star Tori Spelling? I remember that one. Interesting follow up.

But if she was convicted as a child, aren't her records sealed? Maybe it's time for her to change her name again...

Gooch, why does this matter so much to you?

If that person was convicted as a juvenile and they have no additional convictions as an adult, then the record is sealed on a certain date. (Depends where they live as each State would have different legislation for a young offender).

If this is the case, then legally no they don't need to disclose to the BON.

There's a difference between being convicted of a petty crime when they were young, but murder? I wouldn't want to work with or being cared for by this nurse.

She murdered someone.... Why are we trusting a murderer with the lives of others?

Yeah, she did her time... But she freaking killed someone, I would not feel safe as her patient.

This makes me so uncomfortable.

I can understand the sentiment of those who believe this woman should not be caring for patients. It was my very first reaction as well. It is easy to find her new name, her blog, facebook page, etc. Honestly, after reading the story of the murder and the events leading up to it, I still find her act inexcusable. However, she now has a family, and I would never be tempted to "out" this person, especially for the sake of her children. They did nothing wrong, and I can't imagine how terrible it would be to be forced to continually live under the shadow of something your parent has done.

Wow, judgy much.

Wow, judgy much.

Sorry, when it comes to cold-blooded murder, you don't get to use this. You just don't.

That's not teen brain. Mental illness maybe. Or maybe she was bullied back when bully was not an over used term and was sent over the edge. I haven't followed the links and don't know the details.

I don't know, it bothers me. Not that she isn't rotting in prison, but that she's a nurse. There are just some things that should be off limits

How would you guys on the forgiveness/paid her debt side feel about a 15 yr old boy stabbing a girl to death and then going on to be a cop? Or your kid's teacher?
