has anyone seen the previews for this movie contagion, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1598778/? according to this website its:an action-thriller centered on the threat posed by a deadly disease and an international team of doctors contracted by the cdc to deal with the outbreak. my dear boyfriend, was incredibly weirded out by this preview/concept for the movie. he says to me that's like that mrsa and vre stuff you deal with at work. what if something like that movie happened in real life. you're the one always saying that people over use antibiotics. and on and on he went. anyways. is it just me or do movies like this tend to "amp" up peoples fears of mrsa,vre,h1n1 etc. i know this type of movie is fiction. but with all of the pandemics that have been cropping up around the world, it just seems to me that something like this could lead into peoples fears if taken to seriously. thoughts?
I think there are many senarios that can lead to the "worse case senario". I think the more we immunize (some things) and wipe out naturally occuring bacteria in our enviorment (all the anti-bacterial wipes) we are weakening our ability to fight disease. I have been looking at some interesting theories for the increase in auto-immune disorders and our ability to fight disease. The overuse of antibiotics and misuse of antibiotics are developing some virulent strains super bugs that never bothered us in the recent past (50 years or so). That a virulent form of a pre-existing disease can proliferate and cause havoc seem too far fetched? I don't think so.......do I live in fear? NO.
I watched a series on animal planet called Killer outbreaks....VERY INTERESTING!!!!!!

My fears about MRSA or any other bad infection were already ramped up this summer. I had what looked like a little bitty pimple at the outer edge of my right armpit - first noticed it on a Saturday evening, by Monday afternoon I had full blown celllulitis to the whole armpit and extending down to a level at the base of the breast. I had 2 I&D's and was on 3 antibiotics: Bactrim, Rifampin and Cipro. I felt like I had no control of this monster in my body and had visions of needing surgery, IV antibiotics and wound vac. It did finally clear up, the area is still sensitive after 1 1/2 months. I had a very sore red mouth for about 2 weeks, not candida, but think it was a B vitamin deficiency caused by the antibiotics (they can really do a number on you). I am now a skeerdy cat when it comes to the potential for infection. I no longer bathe with the girly shower gels, Dial is all I use now, even on my face.
If you ever notice a little pimple in your armpit run to your doctor!
OP, there have been 'mutant bug ' movies around for decades. "Andromeda Strain" was one from the 70's. I don't think they really arouse that much interest in real infectious disease. Heck, it strikes me that most people don't take the real threat of infection as seriously as they should. Mind you, I don't believe that most micro-organisms are viscous killers. I believe in the 'disease triangle', that is, for disease to occur there must be a virulent pathogen, the proper environment for infection, and a susceptible host. Lucky for us, these three things rarely come together, otherwise I would be looking at another line of work.
This reminds me of Stephen King's The Stand, which for my money is the most realistic representation of what COULD happen.....at least, until he brings the Devil into the equation in the form of a mullet-wearing Jamey Sheridan. The story begins in a maximum-security lab where the world's deadliest bacteria and viruses are housed; one day someone gets a little careless, and a flu virus called "Captain Trips" gets loose and promptly wipes out 99% of the population. THAT could happen.....only the people with top-secret clearance and the hazmat suits really know what's in those little vials.
I'll probably see "Contagion" when it comes out on DVD. Robin Cook, who wrote the novel, is a favorite author of mine and I'll see just about any movie based on his books. :)
If you want to read a really well written book on the subject try "The Hot Zone" by Richard Preston. It's nonfiction, really absorbing, well written (and horrifying).
Just don't make the mistake I did of taking it along to read on a plane flight!
His other books "The Cobra Event" and "The Demon in the Freezer" are equally good.

Good to know Robin Cook wrote it....he's goodAnd he's an MD- has more info to create his fiction.
When I saw the trailer the first time, what I thought was, "Isn't that a book by Robin Cook?" It's been years since I've read it, which means I don't remember it well. Had to do a Google search to confirm. Makes me want to read the book again before I see it! I love reading books and then seeing the movie (did it with "Something Borrowed," and now I want to see "The Lincoln Lawyer," which I've read many times!).
I going to come forward and admit that I love apocolyptic/end-of-the-world movies. Especially when I'm feeling down in the dumps.
I loved Andromeda Strain, anyone remember Omega Man?
Sometimes you just feel the need for a good apocolypse. It's good for what ails ya.
Cloverfield is my current favorite, it's become it's own little cult industry. I highly recommend it.
