Conneticut hospitals and BSNs

U.S.A. Connecticut

Curious how many hospitals in the state require BSNs? Just heard news Bridgeport Hospital, St. Vincent's Medical Center and Bristol Hospital are working towards either magnet status, achieved magnet status, or only hiring BSNs.

I know Hartford Hospital and Middlesex Hospital require BSNs. Not sure about other hospitals owned by Hartford Healthcare though. Yale New Haven Hospital is another one. Not sure about Greenwich they are owned by Yale New Haven Hospital so would assume so.

Curious if any hospitals left in the state where an Associate Nurse can work?

Think only hospitals left be Western Connecticut Health Network (Norwalk, Danbury, & New Milford), Sharon Hospital, Lawrence and Memorial, Waterbury Hospital, Saint Mary's Hospital, Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, Milford Hospital, Stamford Hospital, Hospital of Special Care, UCONN Health Center, and Gaylord Hospital.

Appreciate the feedback.

Norwalk hospital requires BSN. I think Stamford hospital does as well but not positive.

Specializes in Psychiatry, Oncology.

From my job search experience (I am a new grad BSN) with Stamford Hospital and Yale New Haven, both strongly prefer BSN but do hire some ADNs. Many ADNs that I know were hired by both hospitals worked there as techs or CNAs prior to getting their nursing degree. Many, not all. I did hear from the ADNs that hospitals do look for them to either be enrolled in a BSN bridge program or have plans to start one in the near future.

I plan to be a BSN by 2020. Planning to do CNA-LPN-ADN-BSN. I work at a hospital in the state that hires only BSNs. I know Hartford Health Network hires a good number of LPNs and also has an extensive mental health unit. That or going to look at UCONN Health Center and that way in the state know with corrections and DMHAS hire LPNS.

St Vincent's hospital got their magnet in May 2013. They still hire ADN's. However they require that within 1 year of hire you are enrolled in a BSN program and you must complete it within 6 years of hire.

Bridgeport Hosptial is not in the process of Magnet status (and they are also 'owned' by Yale). I have many friends who work there. They hire ADNs. However they strongly prefer BSNs. Bridgeport Hospital, Greenwich Hospital, and St Raphael's are all part of Yale New Haven Health system which is Yale basically. All of the hospitals part of YNNH hire ADN's although its difficult to get in as as one. I have several friends who recently got hired at Yale who are ADNs. However, they are not new grads. There are several departments in each YNNH hospital that require BSN. The unit (SICU, MICU, NICU, PICU etc).

I can't think of one hospital that ONLY hires BSNs at this point. Although I'm sure there are a couple that are well on their way to doing just that.

Day Kimball hires ADN's. I believe Johnson Memorial does as well.

Specializes in Psychiatry, Forensics, Addictions.

If you are interested in psych, CVH hires ADNs

Backups hospital in Norwich ct doesn't currently require BSN but it requires you to sign a contract to receiving your BSN within 5-7 years

Specializes in Family Nurse Practitioner.

HH requires a BSN!!!

Specializes in Psychiatry, Forensics, Addictions.

Middlesex strongly prefers BSNs.

Specializes in ICU / PCU / Telemetry / Oncology.

I had a new grad ADN in my orientation class last May, he did do his clinicals all at Yale so I'm sure that gave him an in. Don't know if he's bound to do a BSN but I'm sure he probably does.

I am thinking of going for my EMT cert. then apply to Yale and Middlesex so that way can attend school at CCSU/SCSU
