Comparing how news media headlines and reports on the same story

Published

There is allot of discussion on news media bias. I thought I would start a topic dedicated to this. I find the best way to gather information of any topic is to read various sources of different political leanings.

To start the conversation, I'll submitt this news story.

A headline from Fox News and one from MDNSBC. Note the different headlines and contents.

This is another example how media uses inflammatory language in their headlines.

Black students allegedly used violent force to make white peers pledge allegiance to BLM at Ohio school

The first headline uses words to accurately describe the story.

The second headline uses strong language and emphasis on the racial demographics.

Both stories contain the same factual information.

That's a pretty good example of a media outlet using such dishonest language in it's headlines and reporting that the hosts and commentators disavow it when pressed.

They've got the keep Mike Lindell happy to keep  those My Pillow commercials running!

Are you explaining this to the other posters or to yourself?  Most of us figured this out decades ago when Rupert Murdoch changed the newspaper landscape and yellow journalism even existed long before Murdoch.  What you have posted should be required reading for high school students.  It's important that young people learn early in life not to be led by disinformation.

I was posted to demonstrate different types of media bias. It was not to provide information.

Perhaps it not learned in high-school? So many people everyday get convinced to believe a certain narrative. Bias media has a great effect on how people form their opinions, especially political opinions.

So how do you propose to solve the problem?

Geoff Bennett:

Dr. Mackey, to Mr. Miller's point, teaching Black history to Black and Latino students comes with its own issues, but we're really having this discussion, generally, because it's white parents who are raising objections and because conservative media is obsessed with this sort of Critical Race Theory issue and conflating Critical Race Theory with Black History Month.

Alabama, as you well know, was the site of many key events in the American civil rights movement. It strikes me that it's not just Black students; it's really white students who are done a disservice if Black history is taught in a sanitized way.

I maintain that it is intentional media misrepresentations that influence and agitate so many conservatives in these topics.

Media will always be bias. As individuals we can research and find ways of coming to conclusions by understanding the ways media does this. Education ourself to spot bias media.

I think there is a variation between teaching the history of racism and teaching CRT.

Presenting historical events factually without inserting  political ideology I have concluded is the better way to do this.

Media has a key role in shaping people's thoughts and opinions on this matter. Not investigating both sides of the arguments risks not understanding as a whole.

Below is a nice article from Allsides linked to Flipside that has both right and left views. I find it well written with both sides represented fairly and accurately. Without inflammatory words or other methods of media bias.

Maybe more conservatives, inflamed to the point of shouting at meetings or threatening school board members, should read your recommended media, @Roitrn.

Maybe they should!  Maybe the left "demonstrators" threatening court justices outside their homes where their children live should read the media you do?

Or the man who targeted and shot Republicans at a baseball game? Have any suggestions of media they should  consume?

Quote

On June 14, 2017, a gunman walked onto a baseball field at Eugene Simpson Park in Alexandria, Virginia, opening fire on politicians and wounding House GOP Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana and four others.

The representatives had been practicing for the annual Congressional Baseball Game for Charity. James Hodgkinson, a 66-year-old man, asked a passing congressman—South Carolina's Jeff Duncan—whether Republicans or Democrats were on the field practicing. Once he received confirmation that the Republican representatives were the ones playing ball, Hodgkinson fired off 60 rounds into the unsuspecting elected officials.

Do you feel these  "angry conservative parents shouting at school board meetings" are representative of the millions if conservative parents? Or these 2 violent criminals who attacked conservative politicians are representative of the millions of democrats? I don't. Perhaps it's the media I choose?

What media are you consuming that gets you so agitated about parents who yell and say mean things?
