Has anyone started a thread yet? The application is due in 174 days and as you can see I'm already obsessing.
Anyone else?!
Hi guys!
I haven't posted much on this thread but everyone's information has been super helpful! I was accepted for the FNP track and am coming from LA! I will be deciding whether or not to go to Columbia based mostly on financial aid and visit day I think, as I am deciding between this and other schools.
I am applying for on campus housing, but am half expecting not to get it since I hear it's super competitive and based on your distance from school? Since there's so many of us coming from California does that mean we can't expect to get housing? Does anyone know how far were people from who received on campus housing last year?
Also on the loans front, if you are over 24, did you include your parent's income anyways on the FAFSA? I didn't as of now, but am rethinking that decision since including my parent's income would increase my purchasing power... any thoughts?
Thanks again everyone for being so insightful and sharing so much information! :)
Also, Mammal, I want to come with you to see apartments. I'll email you!
Don't worry, keep asking, I was on the same boat last year. I know it is a tough decision but you will do great wherever you goEstimated Total Budget (class of 2014) as follow (expect 3% increase in tuition each year):
-Tuition $77320 (sum:$25280 Fall:$24738 Spring:$27342)
-Transcript fee (it's a one time fee) $105
-Fees (err idk what that is but is mandatory) $150
-Technology fee $150
-Computer fee $555
-Health service fee (this one you CAN'T waive it) $1414
-Room & board (if you live at Bard Hall = $800-900; the towers $900-1000; non-campus apartment $1000-1400ish) $24000
-books & supplies $1250 (I didn't buy any books, you don't really need them unless you like reading, things you need to know for exams are on powerpoint slides)
-transportation $1344
-Health Insurance fee (you CAN waive it if your insurance is comparable to the school's one) $4390
-Person Expenses $3600
TOTAL: 114278
Columbia SON does try to help you out with finances as much as they can, the financial aid people are very helpful too. I heard most students in my class got the need-based $25000 scholarships. There are other private scholarships that offer $10000 to New Yorkers and minorities that I am not eligible to apply, check those out on columbia SON website! My financial burden is heavy but management. My finances were covered by the 25K scholarship, fed subsidized and unsubsidized loans, parents PLUS plans, underguad nursing student loans offered by columbia SON, fed Perkins loan (this one you don't need to pay back once you work as a nurse), an outside scholarship, and some family contribution. Despite the big number, I personally think going to Columbia is worth it. :)
Also abbyf...
What's a parent PLUS loan? I thought PLUS loans were only for grad student loans?

Parent PLUS loans are for dependent students in an undergraduate program. I received this when I was in my first bachelor's program because I was still considered a dependent of my parents. Now that I'm an "independent" I can't get this loan.
Grad PLUS loans are for anyone in graduate school.
private message me your emails I can send you pics of my own room at Bard (very messy room tho). I did get my first choice at Bard hall. I am paying $27 dollars a day which is about $800 a month. If you want to have your own bathroom/kitchen you should apply for the towers but they are harder to get and more expensive. I really don't know how many of us got on-campus housing last year. Just apply early.
What are the costs of each of the housing options, abbyf? Do you know? Also, Bard does not have a kitchen?

Hello abbyf! Thank you for your helpful posts. I'm also coming from out-of-state as well and applied to student housing. I tried to look at pictures of the dorms, but there weren't a lot. Did you get your first choice preference? Which on-campus housing do you personally like the best?
