Hi all, just wondering if I could draw on all of your experiance once again. I have a pt on oxygen therapy: 40% cold pot, 3L. I have looked through all of my books and now thought I would pick your brains for what COLD POT means. I am thinking it must be not warmed air (just a guess, could be completely wrong) and if it is indeed cold, why?
thank you soooooo much, once again.
Erin
RE: O2 cold humidification - just off the top of my head I think onw referrence is "The Intensive Care Manual" 4 th Edition by T.E. OH This text has a very good chapter on humidification and camparision on what works and what doesn't but other than that I would have to have a hunt around. As for them growing psuedomonas - any water reservoir is capable of doing this.
Tell us-is this a 99 yr old pt in a vegetative state? Was this pt also in a train wreck? Seriously-One of the more frustrating aspects of clinical for me was often never being able to really follow up on certain pts...You may have transcribed your info incorrectly and you may never see this pt again....Originally posted by Erin RN studenti don't know if this helps but here is the info on the Kardex:
the DX-steriod induced myopathy, tracheostomy, HTN, Left BBB, cholecystectomy, herpes zoster R shoulder, R hemicolectomy for cecal ca, pneumonia
she did have mask on for o2 because of the trach, and she also had NG tube.
no Hx of COLD. the only thing it said about o2 was, 40% cold pot with mask. The night before i was told she was on 5L but now on 3L.
I appreciate your quick responces, hope this helps. thanks erin
sorry if i gave you the wrong impression, I havn't had this pt yet get her on monday, just doing my research and was thrown off by the cold pot and thought my inexperiance was the reason why i didn't know what the heck that was.
I will deffiniantly check with the nurse assigned to this pt and go up from there to the MD on Monday to clarify the order(which it seems like i will have to do). The pt is 86 and was healthy untill she had the R hemicolectomy, then developed the rest in a down hill slide (except the colecytectomy that was past hx).
I will find out what the %$#% is going on and let you all know what is going on. thanks for the replies once again. you all have so many years of experiance behind you and i appreciate responce.

Originally posted by meownsmileI wonder if the "cold pot" has to do with possibly the doc not wanting heated moisture on the trach. With our new trach's we use a heater on the water for moisture when the patient has the trach collar on, could it be referring to the doc NOT wanting the O2 warmed?
YOu were right on, I asked the nurse when i went in and that was her explanation. It was very ineresting to see from what the nurse said they haven't had a trach pt on this unit for many years (?), so we were always refering to the policy manual and double checking everything before going ahead. thanks so much for all the help, I really appreciate your time. Hope this helps to clarify, I definatly learned alot today.

No Hx of COLD sounds like No hx of COPD - also the transcription could be wrong.
Has anyone called to get the MD to clarify.
