Cold blooded administration

Published

i worked in this LTC with a charge RN who when i did a license look up for RN and LPN in our states dept of finance and professional regulation website her name was not there? is this possible? i am RN (15 plus hospital experience) new to LTC and have recently worked and left this LTC which is in the NATIONAL NURSING HOME WATCH LIST 2 star rating for the most injuries....

1. the administrator is NOT A licensed nursing home administrator....activity specialist

2. the house administrators who does admission intake are either dept heads from activity, dietary, human resource etc

3. nursing staff are told to leave exactly on time even if we dont go for our lunch/pee breaks told to punch out of clock and go back to work OR be accused of stealing DON"S CLOCK...

4. fired for reporting to dept head of alzheimers unit a possible case of eldery abuse in unit (not my assigned unit)...and i was only in the unit for 5 minutes and not even clocked in yet...the patient was tied up in bed sheet in waist and hands in dining chair in middle of hallway in between dining room and nurses station in front of 70 plus residents already awake, elevator x3, incoming and outgoing nursing staff yacking in nurses station and totally oblivious of what is going on. I worked in this LTC just few weeks...i asked for reason for being fired.... HR simply said..."you did not pass probation...you are barred from coming to facility...cant come to pick up check except with authorization letter from a representative....

all of my nurse friends said that i should have just"shut up" if i see any wrong doing since i did not work there...was only passing by. i have never been fired in my 16 year HOSP career till i work in LTC....can i make anonymous report for RN impersonator working in this LTC ? i know in our state...they dont take anonmyous report. i read in our website about mandatory reporting of elderly abuse and the reporter is immune from retaliation with prospective employers....i never seen any cold blooded administrators / DON in my life....

i am so sad, depressed....any help and advice greatly appreciated...

I agree with CCM - you don't need to tell ANYONE that you made that call. If you tell your friends, chances are that they will tell their friends and so on and so on.

The Board of Nursing and the Department of Health that Licenses the Nursing Home will take anonomyous complaints. You don't need to tell anyone else you called....

when we make anonymous complaints to DPH

1. do i need to make police report too just in case there will be a sniper hired outside my house by nursing home and the night LPN/CNA that got fired because of my report? i know that the administrator had to fire them too bec i reported the incident to one honest supervisor who reported to administrator/head of abuse and neglect....now if it was the DON/ADON that i reported to...they like you said are the" CARPET PEOPLE".....keep quiet and smile.....dont worry about it kind of thing....thats why i got fired ...they wanted it hush hush....

2. the Board of Nursing in our state dont take anonymous complaints...i knowmy previous charge nurse has no RN/LPN license but i dont work there anymore so it does not matter....she was involved in a patient injury that led to death of elderly...can LTC nurses work x 12 year plus with no license and be covered up by nursing home bec she is in charge of all medicare patients and LPNS?

its been one week since incident....i had only x1 interview so far with a job offer but no salary quote? this is a detox unit in a hospital....should i jump into job offer with no salary quote? i been doing agency in diff .hospital that had been sending me home because the agency forgot to put me in the schedule..

pls pray for me.....i still am sad, depressed, angry , broke for what happened..thanks for listening....had to start from scratch again...

You did the right thing. As far as the Board of Nursing goes you should be commended for your actions.

When you call the DPH, ask them the question about the police. Usually the front line is the DPH and your administrator should have filed the report. If he didn't he will loose his license. As far as the Board of Nursing, I would do nothing let the DPH report the DON to the Board.

If you get offered the job, ask about salary and benefits that is a standard question, and I am impressed you got an interview within one week.

as an agency nurse, never leave an assignment with out a signed slip.....most if not all agencies have a policy of 2-4 hours if THEY screw up. and you dont know if they did or the hospital did....they are supposed to call within a certain timeframe to cancel, and if they didnt and saw you were new they may have pulled that line on you....good luck

Dear God.

It does matter. This nurse and the facility are in violation of your state's nurse practice act and are dangerous to the public. Even if you're no longer employed there, you need to report this. The state BON and your area ombudsman should be able to help you in this matter and, in most states, they should be able to keep your identity confidential.

You are in my prayers.

In the past 2 years I have had the occassion to contact the BON. In my state there is a web site from which you can download a form to fill out with the information you have to report. I find it hard to believe that anyone would be stupid enough to let someone who didn't have a nursing license act as a nurse in a skilled facility --- report it to someone before it turns around and bites you.

Even if the complaint is SUPPOSED to be kept confidential it is not always the case. I have seen it many times where the state comes in the administration end up finding out who filed the complaint.
