Congrats to all those that are accepted and will be the class of 2015. I thought it would be nice to have our own thread where we can support each other along our journey. Mine is an ADN program, but I know some will be BSN as well.
With all that aside has anyone had their nursing orientation yet? How was it? What are some of the costs you have to dish out? Did it finally sink in that you will be starting nursing school soon?
Mine isn't until May 29th 9a-3p. I do know that our tops will be white and our bottoms will be green. I also know we are required to have an iPad which is included in our financial aid. I also know I have to pay $66.00 just for the drug test. The program pays for our in state CORI/SORI but I had to pay for my out of state one which was $31.00. I just payed for that today. We will be required to buy the books, stethoscope, name pin, uniforms, warm up jacket, lab coat, and more. So exciting. We will also schedule our classes on orientation day.
Lets get to know each other so we can support each other :)
Got my reading list, calendar, exam schedule, etc. Wow, plenty to do! Orientation in a month, classes start same week. Also got ATI schedule but can't seem to find what I need on their site. Anyone else having trouble? There are things we can work on early in my program. Tons of reading- need to order my 12 books!! Here we go!
Does anyone here have an iPad for school? If so, do you like it and would you recommend it? I wouldn't use it for eBooks, at least not at first, but for following along with lectures, toting around (my laptop is very heavy), taking notes, and doing homework or surfing the web between classes.

I personally don't have a tablet and here is why I won't buy one for nursing school: Physical books are better for me because I can highlight and write in them, and there's no distractions (such as notifications popping up while following along with a lecture or something). I don't follow along during a lecture usually, I just listen, but if I wanted to, I could just print off the powerpoint slides the day before class and bring them with me. I take notes by hand because I remember them better that way, and I use my laptop to do homework (at home). I use my smartphone for entertainment between classes. If you will be allowed to use electronics during clinicals (which isn't likely, from my experience), they can be useful for looking up drugs etc, but hard to tote around. It's better to get a smartphone which easily will fit into your pocket.
Just my two cents.
I am glad to see I'm not the only one freaking out! I just turned 19 on June 17th and I'm a guy, so I'm really going to stick out in my cohort. I get along well with anybody so I'm not worried about that, and I have my CNA so I don't think first semester will be too foreign to me, but the anxiety of starting is just killing me. My cousin just graduated the program this May, and I have been asking her questions like crazy. I asked her what I should do to prepare for first semester, and she told me to ask my doctor for a Xanax prescription. Haha!By the way, why are some of y'all's orientations happening so soon? I got my acceptance letter in April, and our orientation isn't until mid-August, like a week before the semester begins. Perhaps some of y'all's programs begin in the summer, but if not.. why are the orientations for the fall semester happening in the summer? Seems like it could be easy to forget what was learnt during the orientation.
My school had orientation on May 9th, ours does it do early so that students have a heads up on what the program consists of and therefore are able to decide if it is right for them... By doing it early, if people decide that the program is not right for them then they can give wait listed students a spot and not have to rush them thru the process of getting everything done in time. However we do have a second orientation that is 8 hours long the first day of the semester which is August 26th.
My orientation is Tuesday. Besides college tuition and fees, I've had to pay $800 for books, $750 for ATI access, $75 for scrubs, $100 for equipment, $45 for shoes, $69 for CPR, $42 for background check, $15 for a clicker device, and $50 for malpractice insurance. Nursing isn't cheap!
I had my orientation today. There are two book bundles totaling $1200, but I got all of my books online for a total of $260 (used). Well come to find out, there is an access code in one of the bundles (the bundle is $800), and the bookstore WILL NOT let you buy anything in the bundles "a la carte." So to get that access code, guess what I had to do today? Buy a bundle of books I already have for $858! Im completely disgusted! College, when it comes to costs, can be such a racket!
However, I am so excited to get started! I think nursing school is going to be so much fun! Good luck to everyone!

I'm starting my BSN program this August and I'm pretty excited and nervous at the same time. So far it has been pretty expensive, buying the stethoscope, uniforms, otoscope, uniforms, physical, and drug screening. Our last orientation is July 16th which will basically cover how to wear our uniform and how to behave at clinical sites, we were told to bring our support system so they can explain to them how our time with them will be limited. I know I'm ready I'm just trying to prepare myself for the stress!! Good luck to everyone
