In high school I was always the class clown , never particularly excelled in any given subject. Every teacher always told me that I was smart, just needed to apply myself, but I never bothered..But now I'm thinking of starting nursing school and everyone is doubting me! I've always been a caring person and love making people happy and taking care of them, loved biology & science (especially dissection) and don't get grossed out easily at all. I'm a great multi-tasking..great at decision making and a great people person as well.. I never thought of being a nurse then it just hit me one day and since then everything I do is working towards it and researching it. I was just wondering if anyone else didn't get the best grades in high school but still ended up graduating nursing school and lived on to enjoy a nursing career?

Sounds a lot like me when I was in high school. Was kicked out of 2 schools. Had a 1.2gpa. Dropped out my sophomore year. Once I turned 18 and graduated high school that quickly changed I did great in nursing school. I became obsessed with studying everything and anything nursing. I'm an lvn doing my pre reqs for rn at the moment and have 3 As and 1 B. High school to me was a bit of a joke, I wish I did better but I still had a good outcome.

I never took high school seriously. I caused havoc and mayhem and my own mother taught there. Nursing school was different. Yes, I heard the naysayers too. But I graduated Cum Laude with a 4.0, so go for it.

I graduated High School with about a 2.3 GPA, and never applied myself either. Although I am still taking prerequisites at a Community College, I have a 4.0 in those courses (science, English, stats, etc.), and a 91.3 TEAS score, so I feel confident about being accepted to a BSN program next fall. However, I'm the exception to the rule.
A couple of things that helped me out were having a clear, defined goal when I started school, and understanding what it would take to achieve that goal (basically straight As, high TEAS score, etc.). When I returned to school (I should add that I took nine years off from school), my poor performance in HS was certainly in the back of my head, and the memory of that gave me butterflies and doubt upon returning. Nevertheless, if manage your time well and dedicate yourself to studying (e.g. 3 hours for every hour spent in class), you'll be competitive.

In high school i did horrible! Then a few years passed I went to college obtained a biology degree then my LPN and now I'm a RN.I ran in to someone from high school recently who asked what I did after school I told her about my accomplishments. I asked the same question of her and mind you she was a A student In high school she proceeded to tell me she was considering college. Most people predicated She would have a college degree by now but people change a lot throughout their adult life.High school does not define a person. Good luck:)

The way you carried yourself through high school isn't any type of predictor of how you will do in nursing school. It would be a change, but many people meet the expectations without problems. I would also suggest that a person with a outgoing personality (self described class clown) might have a better time in the profession. You have the ability to talk in front of and to others with ease.
But...... I would suggest shadowing a nurse for a shift or two to get a better understanding of what a nurse does and what nursing involves. It isn't anything like what is shown on television... You may really love it, or you might not. The key is to find out now before your proceed.
Good luck!!!

I was OK in high school. I graduated with a 3.0 without really trying, or having a desire to try.
I was always told how clever and smart I was, and that I had a lot of potential, but my biggest problem was that high school was not a challenge whatsoever. It was so BORING. I took 10 AP classes and all my teachers told me I would score poorly, not pass, etc and I never scored lower than a 4. I do have to say I was satisfied with proving them wrong :) I was always the sarcastic class clown with something to say, and I don't think my teachers like that. Even the highest levels in the school just weren't challenging enough.
This is why I love nursing school. It is actually challenging and I want to do well. For me it is the exact opposite of high school in that I have a desire to do well and try my hardest.
I just wanted to say thank you for all the replies!! It is very reassuring to know that I'm not the only one !! It's nice to hear you guys all took a leap of faith and went for your dream even though you might of doubted yourself! You gave me hope, so thank you ! I start my pre-requisites in Spring 2015!
