Well, I have gone to school for almost 3 years attempting entry into the nursing dept. This college requires almost all A's and have come right out yesterday and told me I should get into dental hygiene because of the C+ in chemistry. The family dentist told me that dental hygienists are having a hard time finding work because there are so many of them. Why would this state college try and steer me into something like that? I am 50 years old and just wonder if all colleges are the same in regard to grades.

C in anything would keep you out of my nursing school. Once you are admitted, you can get C's and stay in, but to get in C's don't cut it. I knew people that did not get in with a 3.5 GPA overall.
I think one of the reasons is that a C in nursing school = 77%, a 76% in nursing school = F
My advisor told me that students that get less than a high B in Chemistry or Microbiology don't make it in nursing school, but he is a jerk so he may have been just spouting off.
Just retake Chemistry and get an A this time, show them that you really want it.
Thank you very much for the words in season. It is hard after approximately 3 years of college to let go....of the nursing aspect. It was a childhood dream that lasted five decades! Your words are correct and right and true and honest. There will be a niche somewhere for me to help people. God is in control and all my trust is in him. There is so much need, it is overwhelming and it is not just people in need. The very Earth itself is in need! Thanks again for your true and needed words.

That is interesting that they suggested dental hygiene. At my school you have to have an A in CHM to get into the Dental Hygeine program and a C to get into the nursing program. You are still elligible to apply to the nursing program right? I hope you are going to apply.
Yes, schools are that tough when is comes to grades and it has more to do with the student population that the school itself. For one thing getting in is so competitive that having the highest possible GPA is practically required at most schools. AND if schools let in students with average grades, they will lose money in the end because the students that fail out would have taken the spot of those with superior performance averages, and they won't be 'paying customers' for the semesters they won't be attending. And that is most likely why the school recommended that you should enter the dental program. Because they are greedy and want your money. Maybe there aren't enough people applying to the program. I hear and see advertisements for dental programs all the time and I think it is NOT SMART. People can barely afford health care let alone go to the dental insurance. More and more dentists are doing their own cleanings and if they do hire a hygenist they don't give that individual enough hours for them to receive benefits, so that person has to have 2 jobs. I have heard so many terrible things about going into the dental hygeine field. I feel bad for people that haven't seen the light yet. Besides, who am I to ruin someones hopes and dreams?
Don't give up! Repeat the class and worst case scenario apply to an LPN program and so the RN transition when you can.

The dental hygienist who works for my dentist is taking prerequisites for nursing school. She told me that she has a family to support and is tired of the lack of opportunity to advance in her field so she is going into nursing. Of course I encourage her every time I see her. Just repeat the chemistry course and look for a program to enter. Don't worry about people who try to discourage you. They don't live your life. Good luck.

Agree with others here: take the course again, get the best grade possible. Don't let some counselor talk you out of your dream!
i agree with everyone else!!! don't let that person talk you out of becoming a nurse!!! who cares that you are in your 50's!!! i applaud you for doing this at your age!!!! it just goes to show you are never to old to follow your dreams!!! continue doing what you can and tell that lady to stick it where the sun don't shine!:)

That is so ridiculous. I got a C in Chemistry and I am about to graduate nursing school with almost all A's and a few B's. I would try a different school! Good luck! They aren't all like that.

I came to the conclusion that I will have to keep my focus on the LORD.
Thanks to all with the helpful advice. Apparently from all the responses posted here, every school must have their own set of guidelines as to the qualifiers to gain entry into the nursing segment of college. Unfortunately, C+ is not good enough at this state university, at least in chemistry, although the community college requires no chemistry whatsoever! It is all mind bogglingly craziness and I am now going into the direction of counseling for a career. A word of warning to all: The counselor in "Human Services" informed me that starting in January, their department will also begin requiring guidelines similar to the Nursing Dept. It will be much harder to gain entry so my advice to anyone struggling with the decision of which direction to go (if having difficulty maintaining A's for grades to enter nursing) would be to figure it out quickly, that is, if their next best goal is in Humanities! Thanks again.
