Charting in Powerschool

Published

Do any of you chart your clinic visits in powerschool? They have told us we are going to start but that was years ago and they never began it. I think it was a privacy, HIPPA, FERPA issue but not sure.

Anyone else use it? Like it? Dislike it?

Ugh, Power School stinks for charting. Granted, it has been a few years since I used it, but it was not set up to be an EMR at that time.

I use SchoolBrains, which like Power School is a very integrated system for everything - attendance, grades, SPED, health, etc. But it does allow certain users to see certain things. The only people who has access to the health portal are me, the nurse at our other school building, and my boss. I can chose to share certain things from that portal to a general student's file if I wish, i.e. flag for health issue like asthma or peanut allergy. Teachers only have access to students they teach.

SchoolBrains, however, like Power School, was not designed to be an EMR, the health was added after. So it has bumps, a lot of them, especially because I transitioned to it from SNAP, which I really liked. But it has improved. I hope Power School has as well!

I chart in PS and I don;t love it. Admin puts in its own "reasons for visit" and if the reason isn't listed I check other. There is a box for a narrative of complaint and then assessment so it is almost like you have to chart a SOAP.

SchoolBrains is set up with three boxes: Complaints, Assessment, Intervention, so it, too, reads like a SOAP note.

I chart in PS and only use narrative charting. I do not put anything in the drop down menus other than it is a health visit. We do not use the Health Tab. Only the Log tab.

I chart in PS as well. It's a narrative under the log. We do "Health", and then have subtypes set up (clinic visit, ER, sent home).

It's okay, but I definitely don't love it.

Interesting because on my PS I don't have a "Log" tab. I think admin can customize tabs. If I click on Health, I then have four tabs: Immunizations, screenings, Office Visits, and Grade Entry Level Certifications. None of my tabs along the left side of my screen have a Log tab either.

We switched to Skyward, which it's a good program, but It's hard to change to a new system. It still has some bugs here and there, but it's getting better.

Before we got CareDox, charting was done in PowerSchool. The switch was made right about the time I was hired so I didn't do much in PS. Unless your IT team can build some things in specific for you (which I don't even know is possible...just thinking "out loud") it's completely narrative notes.

We use the health tab. It's ok. Would not be my favorite program. Hard to do counts of clinic visits and impossible to run a correct immunization report. And others (admin) can change your logs if they wish. I've never known them to, but still, I question the legality of a non secure system. It is easy enough to use.

District changing to PowerSchool.

Can you open several students and keep them in a que before charting or can you only open one student at a time? Also, does it remember your most common phrases so you don't have to type out everything on each student?

Only 1 at a time. Powerschool for me- time consuming and restrictive. I would love to have something like a quick text, seems like I chart the same things over and over. Asked IT, said it couldnt be done.
