Celebrate Your Fall 2010 Acceptances Here!!!

Published

Im graduating in may with a BS in health sciences from Michigan State. The nursing program is extremely hard to get into here so I just decided to get a health related degree while there and then apply to other nursing programs when I graduated.

I applied to about 4 schools and I just got accepted into my first choice school so I dont even care about hearing from the rest of the schools I applied to. Im really excited/nervous and proud of myself because I got in on the first try:D. I also get to start off in the actual nursing courses and clinicals since I already have all the gen ed and pre req courses completed, which also cuts down the cost by $18,000!

What about you guys?

I got my letter yesterday I start KBCC School of Nursing in Sept! I already have a BS but this made more sense for me money wise. I can't wait!

Dont worry, I already have a BS too so I'll be in an associates degree program as well. It wasnt about the money for me, because I only owe $8,000 for undergrad, which isnt a lot at all compared to what others owe. Personally, I just didnt see the point in having two bachelors degrees, especially now since they have the ADN-MSN bridge programs. Whats important is that we got into the program...

Okay, so I just wanted to update. On Wednesday I had my pre-registration day at the school. We had to turn in all of our documentation, get photos taken for our ID's, submit info for our parking passes, do fingerprinting, have background check done, and try on/buy uniforms! I was so excited, LOL. I felt like a little kid. Maybe trying on the uniforms made me realize that I can finally officially consider myself a nursing student...

I also had my drug test done at one of the labs while I was in the city. The school Im attending is out-of-state, so I also had to try and find an apartment while I was there. I dont foresee myself going there again until a week before the program starts so I have to choose my apartment based on the apartments I saw while I was visiting (which sucks!)

And I dont know about you guys but this program has been costing me a TON of money and I havent even started yet!

  • Deposit : $350
  • CPR/First Aid/BLS : $70
  • 2 Step TB Test : $30
  • Lab Coat : $23
  • Uniform x 2 : $116

Total so far = $589

And I still havent gotten my shoes for clinical, books, clinical supplies (stethoscope, etc). And on top of that I need furniture and other things. This is so crazy!

What about you guys?

LOL...Well congrats and welcome to the party!

I got my acceptance in May, yeah! But last week, I was notified that the program was being cancelled.:crying2: Long story but, the accelerated second degree bac program did not receive it's final approval for its pilot hybrid program. However...the same university, probably realizing the PR fiasco they had on hand for sending acceptances before program approval, offered me a spot in their traditional program on campus. Problem is, campus is almost 1 hr 45 minutes away. That's why I original wanted the hybrid program, so I'd have the bulk of my studies online.

My question is, and I need help with this one everyone...am I crazy to accept the spot and do the commute? It is the only school I have applied so far, but I am so afraid of the wait and see. Here in California, my options are limited because I already have my bachelors, so Cal State won't accept transfers from those with degrees. I either need to do ADN (which is usually lottery or wait list, or crazy high GPA), or expensive private schools or just as expensive second degree programs. And at a 3.0, not that competive either.

I did find a fellow student that I can carpool the last hour drive, and I am sure I will find more. But that's an extra 3 hours a day over a local commute. School starts AUG 29th, so I'm afraid if I pass up this offer, I won't know till December if any other schools will take me for Spring.

On the plus side, it's almost $30K less than the original program I was accepted into. All my friends say I can do it, but my husband says being on the road so much isn't safe. When I was a sales rep, I had easily driven 120 miles a day, but now were talking almost 2X that. But school is only a 6 hour a day (except for clinicals), so call it a wash? I'm trying to look it as a part time job... I drive 3 hours a day to make that $30K I save over 2 years.

BTW, the school is in San Diego, but if class starts at 7am, no traffic for me. So should I do it?

I would. I was cconsidering a two hour commute to a school up in Phoenix until I got my acceptance letter. It'd stink to high heaven, but you and the person you carpool with could spend the extra time in the car quizzing each other. (Or just talking to relieve stress!) Your husband has a point about it not being safe, but then again, being on the road for only a 30 minute commute isn't safe either. I would suggest making friends REALLY quickly with someone local who might have a couch you could crash on in case you're too tired to drive home some night.

Congrats! Being psyched is a good feeling isnt it? sometimes I still cant believe that I was accepeted, especially since its so hard to get into a program these days. Now Im just preparing myself for the hard road that this is going to be.

Are you a single mom or married? I ask because I have 2 kids (4 yrs and 1 yr) but Im a single mom and Im going to a program in a different state away from my support system which is the real reason why Im so nervous. But I have to keep telling myself that I know I can do this! I do pretty good at succeeding when I put my heart and my mind completely into something, so this shouldnt be any different. But still, Im super nervous!

I'm doing the same moved from mass to GA now. Got accepted in Alabama and I have a 4 month old tough choice what can I do

Thats honestly a tough one especially since it sounds like you have a family. I know that there are PLENTY of people that do it everyday but that doesnt necessarily mean that its the right choice for you. Personally, I would do it but only if it was a couple times a week. So I guess you should factor in what your class schedule would be and how many times you would actually have to make the drive. If classes are only twice a week then go for it but if its more than that you may want to consider other options. But I've heard how hard it is to get accepted into programs in Cali so if that was the only school you applied to I say go for it!

Thanks Starmickey and KristeyK. I used to get up at 4am to commute to work at 6am-3pm. Then I'd get home at 5 because of the traffic! But with this I'd be home from school by 3. It's just the whole losing 3 hours I could use for studying.

This is just so hard because it was the only school that let me apply with courses in progress, which forces me to make a decision even before I could apply to the other schools in Cali....Still on the fence.

Got my letter in yesterday. I got the number one spot out of 69 applicants. Now apparently I have a month to get CPR certified, get a physical, a tb test, and a drug test before orientation. I'm still hoping I won't be the only guy though.

LOL...With a class of only 69 students you may very well be the only male. I believe our class has 155 students and I only counted 5 men by looking at the class roster.
