Can nurses report MD;s and to who

Published

We have this MD on staff at work who is notorious for being rude to the nurses to the point of neglecting or out right abusing our residents. For example in an emergency the other night we had to call him by order of our NM to ok a prn aeresol because res heart rate was EXTREMELY high and she was concerned that the treatment would make matters worse. So we called him he was very PO'D and rudely said "use your damn prn orders and dont even think of calling me again tonight" He does this sort of thing all the time. He has hung up on us, told us not to bother him and refused to give us needed orders. He has been allowed to get away with this for far too long. We nurses do not feel that he should remain on staff. Since management does not seem able or willing to do anything about this we nurses have decided that when he is on call and we are instructed to or need to call him that we are going to tell the on call NM that she will have to make the call as we will not. Now I know it is not appropriate to mouth off to management like that but we are tired of his abuse and we are not taking it anymore even if it means losing our jobs. Ok back to my question. Can nurses report MD;s to the AMA or somebody and if so how do we go about doing it?

teeituptom - you crack me up! :chuckle

I'm not even passive aggressive. I'm not even overly nice. Just to the point.

I work nights. I call when I need to call. PERIOD.

Interestingly. . . for whatever reason. . . I've never had any problems. . . yet. Not even a "How dare you call me at this hour."

I agree with all the other posters stating to write what he says as a verbal order. If possible, though, I would suggest having another nurse on the line to witness this: that way, if and when it turns into a he said, she said type of thing, you're more covered by having the order signed by two nurses.

Teeituptom - big ol' HEE, too funny!!

I had problems after delivery - not only were the nurses afraid to call my OB, he came specifically to see me the next morning at 7 AM to yell at me for bothering the nurses for calling him!! I was in tears the rest of the day.

Debated reporting the maniac to the AMA, and he later fell over himself apologizing, stating that he hoped I'd forget the "little incident" in the hospital.

Just last year a patient filed suit against him, and his defense was "but I'm a top doc; three magazines say so". Obviously his defense made headlines.

He should be reported to your risk manager and the ECMS (some version of the Executive Committee of the Medical Staff). Of course you can report a physician!!!!

You may have better luck getting one of his colleagues to talk with him, too.

Just his comment about not even thinking about calling him again should be addresses.

Thanks for all the advice. We did fill out a concern dont know how far it will go but we are definately refusing to call him and forcing our NM,s to make the calls. Maybe they will get sick of it too and do something. I always right what the MD says word for word with quotation marks in nurses notes and on MD order form. Again thanks for the suggestions.

Does your state have a verbal abuse law????? Workplace violence includes verbal abuse. To whom would you report if a co-worker hit you? Remember, you do not work for the MD. As for his comments about not calling again, I would respond with "I will call you whenever your patient's condition requires me to do so". That might prod him/her into making a threat, which will be grounds for assault (in my state)

Agreed!

I've actually done this before. One time the rude doc brought the chart to me the next day, stuck it under my nose, and said, "What if this went to court?!" Having anticipated that he might do such a thing, I had an answer ready.

I just smiled at him and said, "Well, you just might need some other nurses to testify that you would never, ever, say such a thing when we call you about a patient with a problem!"

I will definitely use this one!!! Trouble is, I know I will be reprimanded by administration for it, but it may just be worth it.
