Can I get Fired?

Published

Can I get fired for starting an iv on myself at work? Co workers and I were talking about it. Just a needle and some alcohol not even flushed just got in and took it out. Scared about getting fired now.

You could, depends on why you did it. We sometimes let new folks practice on us. Our management looks the other way but we could probably get in trouble if someone made a fuss.

I'm pretty impressed that you could start an IV on yourself.

Doubt it, you're not administering anything in to yourself. I always talking from an NHS perspective of course, but there's no way you would get in trouble simply for practising on each other.

If it was the kind of thing where people sit around doing these things on dares or to impress each other, it's pretty likely they won't be completely pleased with how you all are choosing to spend your time on the clock (wasting time and supplies). Starting an IV on oneself isn't much of a feat/not difficult. ?

I agree that we have allowed people who need practice to practice on us without getting in trouble.

Although I did this once, I recommend avoiding these kinds of public shenanigans at work. Often there's a killjoy tattletale in every crowd.

I wouldn't show off a skill like that. Might make people wonder if I was doing that home alone on my off time. Way too many questions.

In the US, unless you are in a union, you can get fired for any reason except one relating to a protected class (e.g. race, ethnicity, religion, age, disability, etc.).

Yeah. When I got caught I just call it "a workplace bonus":

"Hey! They didn't give me a Christmas bonus, so I'm taking this instead!"

You might have to pay for the IV cannula and alcohol wipe - retail price - likely less than $1200.00 ?

I am really curious as to why you did this?

Were you practicing? Was there explicitly a rule against it?

Not in my state. Getting fired means you don't qualify for unemployment because the termination was your fault.

Therefore, you can't be fired because the boss wants his son to have the job, for example. The company has to prove that it was your fault, and that usually means documented write ups and corrective action before they terminate you.

But I am not sure that all states afford employees the same legal protection.
