Calling yourself a "nurse"

Published

maybe its just me, but i get very bothered when someone says "i'm a nurse," and their not, their a cna, or nurse aid, or have no schooling at all and just worked their way up in a clinic. i work at a local emergency clinic 30 hours a week to gain experience in my field, and i just got accepted in ns, and i'v worked darn hard to get here! and i find it bothersome when one of the girls at work say "i'm the nurse" or something along those lines...i feel that when i graduate and pass my nclex that, only then, will i be able to say "i'm a nurse." the other day my doctor said "jamie, will you get a nurse?" i said "im sorry doc, i dont think we have any of those working here." he actually laughed and said "you know what i mean"......but is this just me?????:uhoh3:

And I doubt that the number and variety of restaurants has decreased that much. I also still eat cheese sandwiches, just not every day, unlike those prisoners. I don't understand what they expect. They want health care, drugs to treat their AIDES, cable TV, libraries, weight rooms to buff themselves up. Like they should be put in a cell for twenty-three hours a day. They don't behave and they are, after all, prisoners. Why waste our tax dollars molly colling them.

And I have a lovely lot for sale down here in Florida. It is located right next to Starke Prison.

Heck, it sounds like I may be getting more than cheese sandwiches! If I can get cable, a library, weight rooms and people to pay for it, then, it sounds like a consideration. Meet PaganDeva2000 MD Extrordinare! Aspirin scripts, anyone?

PoppaD,

You took the words right out of my mouth. I, too, am in SC and it is definitely illegal to portray yourself as a nurse if you are not one. It can be reported to the BON. I worked for a dermatologist who called all his assistants (scrub techs, lab) nurses. When I began working there I reminded him it was illegal and after that I was his only RN and we had one LPN. The other employees would still say "I'm Dr. so and so's nurse" and the physician began correcting them.

Mary

Excellent post. Then what about Mother theresa who gave up all her wealth and went and helped the people dying of AIDS and leprosy?

Ooowww. An excellent point. Would it be illegal to call Mother Theresa a nurse?

LOL...well, the day I see a Mother Theresa Clone sitting in a comfy desk chair in a doctor's office, giving out medical advice to the clients, I suppose it's worth debating! Meantime, it's hardly a parallel to the current discussion.

Lets see if I got you right. You are saying that someone who lies about being a nurses, tells a lie. Then that lie becomes a "FACT"

I dont see it that way

I think what they mean is that it becomes fact to the person who is being deceived. If I was told by a "nurse" that I need to do xyz then I would assume b/c they told me they are a nurse, that xyz is in fact what I need to do.

So the fake becomes fact when the person receiving the information believes it to be true. HTH

Lets see if I understand you correctly. If a lie comes from believable sourse then it becomes a fact. Is this right. I can see your point, We have all been told that The war in Afghanistan and Iraq was strictly due to 9-11,. We have been told the war in Iraq was to stop proliferation of nuclear threat, , we have been told this war is necessary for human rights, .. We have all been told this by someone who says they are the president, Therefore everything the President Bushie says is a fact. Again False:balloons::down::down::lol2:

No, we shouldn't book them into suites at the Hilton. And yes, they are prisoners in jail but that doesn't mean that a sheriff has the right to humiliate them. Or house them in tents. Have you ever been in Phoenix, at night, in 99 degree heat, at night? I have. And at worse, prisoners should be afforded at a minimum, fans, which they are not. And I believe that every human being, regardless of who or where they are, deserves to be treated as a human being, not as some cast out. Not as a second class citizen. But then again, I do not believe that prisoners held by Bush, should be treated as they are. Color me a nasty, dirty liberal.

They should be treated as prisoners, and a lot of their citizen rights are lost when they are convicted of major offenses. As they should be.

Calling yourself a nurse when you're not is deceit, plain and simple. I owe it to my pts. who trust me to take care of them to not lie about my title.

I am not complaining about them not doing their time. I am complaining that they are treated as third class citizens. And not even citizens. I realize you live in Texas and it certainly is hot in Texas. But I have been thru Arizona during different times of the year over the years from 1958 to 2001. I wouldn't let my pet dog sleep outside during the summer in Arizona. While the humidity is low, it is just too damn hot, even at night. And as a nurse, I wonder how much this great sheriff spends on health care, when his prisoners suffer from dehydration? Or how much he spends on the health care needs of his prisoners? You see, despite his contention, we are a country governed by laws. Laws that even the sheriff has to follow. Sorry if I think that prisoners should be treated as human beings. I'm funny that way. It is the liberal in me. As a matter of fact, I also do not believe in the death penalty.

I'm sorry but it is your type of attitude that is a problem. You seem to believe that pay is the only and most important issue. It may be for you. For me, the entry level, the skills and knowledge, what makes up a nurse are much more important then a slary. And I was paid much more than even the average DON, here in Florida.

Woody

Amen!

I don't think its pay or any of that...what I think is that I EARNED the right to call myself Nurse b/c I spent several years of my life doing things that disrupted my family b/c I was studying or couldnt' do things on clinical weekends/days, etc.). I worked to put myself through NS and I am now a new nurse, RN as of last month. So it isn't about money or looking down. Heck most of the CNA's and MA's I know, know way more about hands on stuff than I do and I respect them. But that being said I did earn the right to say I have a license. I don't think its too much to ask that someone who did not spend all that time and money on it, not use the term.

"Former" BSN?

sorry for the confusion. I graduated with a BSN and in the first month on the job I had to have an arm amputated after an MVA. After lots of rehab, I am back in school to become a medical technologist at a place that will make accomadations for me.

Rehab nurses are terrific!

Megan

ok, sometimes i feel i'm obsessing about this subjuct. just when i think i'm "letting it go", there -before my eyes , is another post from a cma , who says they do the same thing a rn, just without the pay. that "they do the same thing only get stuck with the dirty jobs" or that they are "equal to lpn's". oh my gosh........ please let me at them !!!!!!:banghead:. please......please.....

Megan,

I'm so sorry to hear what you've gone through. Just wanted to say that your BSN isn't taken away from you just because you aren't working as an RN. Did you keep your RN license? Were you not able to find any RN jobs that would accommodate you? I thought they were required to by law?
