Official Statement Regarding Passing of Brian Short, Founder of allnurses.com, September 12, 2015
We are deeply saddened by the unexpected death of Brian Short, founder of allnurses.com. We respectfully request that you grant the company's employees, friends, families and associates privacy during this difficult time. allnurses will continue to support nursing professionals by providing an unparalleled peer-to-peer online community where they can share experiences and learn from and support one another.
Please use this thread to post your comments of condolence and gratitude for Brian who created this wonderful nursing community that has benefited so many.
To the families of Karen and Brian, I can't pretend to know how you all are feeling. Losing five loved ones so suddenly is so unspeakably sad. The glare of publicity and the comments from strangers must make this all even harder for you and I'm sorry for that.
Please know that many of those strangers are holding you close in our hearts and prayers. Be gentle with yourselves and with each other. God bless.
Brian started allnurses, to have a place for nurses to connect, and be able to voice concerns, and frustrations about their workplace, and isssues.
I believe that the best way we can honor Brian and the work that he did and he accomplished, is to be the voice of the nursing profession.
Stand up for ourselves, and ultimately, that is standing up for the patients, and families that we care for on a daily basis.
That means moving out of our comfort zones, to speak up for staffing ratios, patient care issues, and if need be, joining together, to become ONE VOICE. That means going to the public to educate them, and get their support.
Even if that means joining organizations that assist and protect the nursing profession, to accomplish these goals. Even at the risk of losing our jobs.
Here in Spokane, the teachers barely approved a contract, that addressed, pay, benefits, classroom issues, pay for low paid teaching assistants. They all received significantly higher raises that nurses will ever see. They were ready to go on strike for themselves, and ultimatly their students.
The most important thing that Brian did was to allow nurses to learn how to voice their concerns, in a sort of, "practice", when we have to speak to the PTB. To allow nurses from all over, to be the voice that we need to be heard.
Let us all honor Brian by each of us, making it our goal, to leave the nursing profession, a better place. Don't make his death be in vain.
RIP Brian. God Speed.

This is heartbreaking and I am speechless. Allnurses has been my nursing home since June 05. A place I feel safe to talk about life and nursing. Thank you for giving us Allnurses Brian. We will never forget you.
