Books to read before starting nursing school

I am trying to find out what books to read in order to catch up on anatomy and physiology before school starts in January. I just got accepted into a program at my college and haven't taken A and P in about 2 years and I rented my books, so any tips are welcome :)

Don't read anything for school. Enjoy life right now cause once you start school, life suddenly sucks.

Read for pleasure now, once you start school you won't have much leisure time.

You took the words right off my keyboard.

Specializes in ER, progressive care.

I agree. Read for relaxation and do things that you enjoy. Spend time with loved ones. If you can afford it and if you have time, take a little vacation. You'll so busy with school that you won't really have time for anything else, unfortunately.

Specializes in psych,maternity, ltc, clinic.

My sister and her husband, both in health care, gave me " The House of God" to read before I started nursing school. Takes place in the 70's and follows a group of first year interns. I read it in the 90's and thought it was hilarious! Don't know how it would play now, but Fat Man's laws are worth the price of admission.

I would invest in a good A and P book. It's good to review each system in the A and P book before you start that unit in class. When you really truly understand how things work correctly, it makes understanding the pathology that much easier.

I would read the non-fiction book "The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down: A Hmong Child, Her American Doctors, and the Collision of Two Cultures."

It's a great read and applicable to anyone involved in healthcare in any way.

I had to read this for my program, it was really good.

Specializes in critical care.

Read NOTHING. Go on vacation!

If you already have the books for class get started on those.

I would recommend "Bed Number Ten". It's a good book and will give you ideas about bedside manner.

Read that when it was published in Reader's Digest, then read the whole book. It's a great read written by a patient.

Your desire to read and review before it starts shows that you'll do just fine. I agree with the other posters that this is the time to read for pleasure. You'll get the rest in school. Also, I second that Khan Academy videos are great reviews and not boring!

Dang! You beat me to it. "House of God" is a must read for the inside jokes and definition of a "Gomer"
