Does anyone have any information on Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City ( the one downtown at 16th and First )?

I'm a New Grad, I just passed NCLEX, and I've been offered a job there on a cardiac/tele unit. If anyone has any helpful info/advice about the place and what to expect I would really appreciate it.

First, I would like to congratulate you for finishing nursing school. From a lot of the posts, there is a big thinning when you go to school.

Although I now live, work and go to school in Florida, I am originally from NY and I plan to return once I finish nursing school myself.

I haven't worked at Beth Israel Medical Center but I believe that it has a real good reputation. The best of luck to you.

Will you be living in the city as well? I'm curious what the salaries are like for new grads in NYC. In Florida, it is quite horrid ($14.90/hr to start).

Starting salaries here in NYC are $25 - $30/hr.

I'v been offered $60,000+ with the differential for evenings to start as a new grad, which after reading the posts about saleries in other parts of the country is pretty good I guess.

Wow! That's pretty good. Are you a BSN or ADN?

Besides school, I work in a Cardiology practice in Sarasota. It's a very interesting specialty. The nurses I work with are really great.

I, myself, am interested in L&D, NICU or nursery.

I'm an ADN program grad. The differential for a BSN is $1,000/yr.

However, there are several hospitals here that only hire BSN grads (Mt. Sinai, NYU, Columbia)

I've already decided to start working on my BSN-MSN in a combined program for RN's on part-time basis this fall. I'm going for acute care NP.

Do you know where you are going to go to school for the BSN-MSN? Where did you do your ADN?

I tried to get in the ADN which would start this year, but I didn't have enough credits (they first pick applicants who have completed the most prereqs). By the end of this next year, I'll have 50 credits and I don't know whether I should apply here or just go for the BSN directly at the University.:confused:

the RNs at BI are represented along with all the other emplyees by SEIU/1199. The hospital is part of The Continuum Health Partners System. The website is http://www.WeHealNY.com

Your salary is about average for a new grad ADN in Manhattan

Its about $5,000/yr less in Brooklyn.

I did mostly all of my clinicals at Beth Israel and I have to say it all depends on the unit. Some were nice, clean, organized, and supportive while others were a disaster and really not a nice atmosphere (especially if you're trying to learn). Before accepting a position, make sure you visit the unit, see if you can shadow a nurse for a few hours so you can get an idea of what it's like.

In response to another post, Columbia does hire ADNs. I think NYU and Mt. Sanai are the only ones that dont.

I did some time at BI. I regret to say that it was not a good experience. However, that may vary with the unit.

Despite being a union facility, nurses get mandated to do OT frequently. As in....you get a phone call at 0730 after being on duty since 2345, and they tell you that you have to stay another 8 hours. And that doesn't change the fact that you are due back in at 2345 the next day. This can cause some problems with your other obligations.

And the union thing, there were staffers that were serious dead weight that had been there forever. I was told (often!!!!!!!!) that it was so hard to document things enough to fire them. Most of the problems were with ancillary staff (not licensed) but your life was a misery if you paired with one. Or followed a licensed "lifer" that was slack.

I worked with one aide that literally had her cell phone bead in her ear while making rounds...for over 1 hour...chatting on her phone...while passing water in patient's rooms... checking I/Os..changing people. I mentioned it to the manager. Wherupon, I was persona nongrata and subjected to a alot of passive aggressive behavior from said aide.

There are some really wonderful staffers and some really awesome programs at that hospital. They do some really good things. But I really did not feel like it was a safe place for my nursing.

There are serious mismanagement issues. I would go into the stock and they would be out of NS, an essential item. Or the bathrooms run out of TP on the weekends (every weekend) and you have to get someone to UNLOCK a room to get a roll of TP. The tube system NEVER (EVER) has tubes on the floor. And on some units, the tube system does not go to either the lab or the pharmacy (what good is it, then?). The fax machines don't work or requires codes that no one on duty ever has. You have to hand carry orders and labs to the different departments, if they are needed within 1-2 hours. Not to mention, wait for the pharmacy to dispense meds..to hand carry back to the floor.

You would have a case of D5 1/4NS (how often do you use that on most MS floors?) and not have a spare roll of toilet paper or chux or briefs.

Like I said, they do some great things and I met some wonderful nurses/interns/residents/managers/aides there. But the place has issues.

Hey NYCRN2, I just got offered a position on a soon to be tele floor at BI also. I take the NCLEX next week so I won't start until the Sep 11 orientation. Let me know if you've accepted, started, how it's going, or if I'll see ya at the orientation! :-)
