Best Inservices you've had

Me and another school nurse have just been nominated to be the co-president of our county School Nurse Association.  We are now tasked with finding and preparing our fall and Spring inservices.  We are looking for new and innovative topics and presentations.  What are some of the best ideas you have?!  If you could pick a topic or program, what would it be?

The best Inservice I have had was training in emergency situations

An inservice years ago from police that reviewed illegal drugs. Things to watch for drugs, alcohol, and they even brought things that had been taken from students that was used to use drugs. I was very naive about the ways students get around this.

Specializes in Pediatrics, Community Health, School Health.

Where are you located?  Human trafficking is a big issue and we are seeing it in our community.  There are great programs that will talk to school nurses, teachers, guidance counselors, etc. about what to look for, red flags, etc.

Also MERP (medical emergency response plan) a training- not like drills, but actually setting up a system, team, etc. so you have a solid step by step plan in place with personnel and who does what, etc.

Specializes in 12 years as a school nurse.

CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) was a good one I have done and it was offered at my school this year. It was a shorter version with great practical applications for de-escalating a situation as well as intervening if it becomes physical.

Specializes in pediatrics, school nursing.

Stop the Bleed, SETT (School Emergency Triage Training - a national organization with a HUGE book), and diabetes education specifically for school nurses. The diabetes education was huge for me. I didn't have a diabetic at the time, but knew one was coming, and I was so nervous, but the training was really helpful. It was done by the certified Diabetes Nurse Educators from the Pedi Endo team at the closest Children's Hospital. It really demystified a lot for me as I'd only seen kids in crisis on insulin drips and adults on sliding scale insulin prior to that.

Specializes in School Nursing.

We also had a mental health first aid training that was very informative.

Specializes in ER/School/Rural Nursing/Health Department.

I just took this on my own and loved it!  I learned so much and it really helped with what to say to some of the kids.

What a great topic!  I can't wait to hear what others have to say so I can get some good ideas too!

Our best inservices have been:

* a presentation from our local mental health nonprofit (that provides services to a lot of our students) coming in to talk to us about resources so we know what is available when we're asked

* MH-TIPS (Mental Health Training Intervention for Health Providers in Schools) - free, online and offered through the University of Maryland - increases competence in mental health issues, resources and implementing support in the schools

* a presentation from our school resource officer for identifying when a student is on a substance and what type of substance they may be on, what side effects we might see and what to do if there is an overdose at school

* a presentation from the Epilepsy Foundation of Minnesota to increase our knowledge of different types of seizures, treatments and what to do if a student is having a seizure at school

Specializes in kids.
