Good i got your attention.

Tonight i made a call to a friend of mine, after not keeping in contact for a few months, due to me being busy with school.

Anyways after chit chatting for a few i told her what i have been up to for the past year, which was( going to school to be an LPN) she in turns, responds, "like what a waste, i hate nurses, they dont do anything but write paper work and give a few shots all day , and its not even an important job, because nurses dont even do direct patient care, i would give a doctor more respect because they went to school longer, and all nurses do it take on the job a doctor dont want to do." by this time i was :angryfire i could'nt believe the ignorance i was hearing. Anyways she had the nerve to continue, she says" right now i work in an icu department of a hospital as a secretary and if i work a lot of hours i can make the same amount of money as a LPN and besides i am going to school for massage therapy in a few months, and i will be making way more money than a nurse, she claims she will be making 80$ an hour ( w elive in different states, she lives in albany NY ) and she continues to say , i can make my clients feel good, and its direct patient care, unlike nurses, so at this point i forgot the reason i called her which was to check how things were doing, with her, i was very irritated, but it made no sense to explain things to someone who is ignorant about the facts, i guess she was just jealous that i have actually acomplished something, but thats how some people her they bring you down to make themself look good.

Do anyone really know a massage therapist that make 80$ that dont have their own business? The few massage therapist i know are very unhappy with their chosen career path.

you sure did get my attention with that title, esp. since i JUST graduated with my LPN! anyways, my story is kind of like yours, but opposite. My boyfriend's sister graduated from a tech school a couple of years ago, and her major was-massage therapy! it's been about 2 years since she graduated, and she hasn't even applied for her state license or whatever. do you know what she wants to do? Go to NURSING school now! She said she could make okay money as a massage ther., but she wants the respect and knowledge of being a nurse. how funny! dont worry about your friend, she's prolly jealous.

I imagine if you work for yourself as a massage therapist you can make decent money.I know a few and they say it's hard on the body-nursing is also but we can move into less physically demanding areas when we get old and decrepit.She won't be able to do that....

I wouldn't place any further phone calls to your so-called 'friend' anymore. There's absolutely no need to insult another person's career path unless the offending insulter has serious issues with insecurity and envy.

In addition to the aforementioned comments, being an LPN is quite significant.

i second the other posters.....don't bother calling this 'friend' back. why? as for 'direct' patient care, i have done more of this than she is seeing as a secretary in icu. as that secretary, she should see the direct care we nurses give.

as for the massage therapist getting $80 an hour: i am sure a friends wife would like to know that. she would have finished up her courses waaay sooner.

now to go laugh a bit more over your 'friend's' misconceptions. after 19 years as an lpn, i talk from experience. you can, too. can she?

Just wanted to jump in and say that I know and work with some excellent, hardworking LPNs.

I admit, I encourage them to go on to get the RN because the pay will be better, not because I think less of LPNs as professionals. I know that in my job, I make about $7/hr more than the LPNs, with shift diff. Doesn't seem fair, KWIM?

You're making a big, positive difference in people's lives. I wanted to assure you of that also.

Evidently your "friend" hasn't heard the results from a recent poll among Americans, when asked who they trust most as a professional, their answer NURSES! (Even more so than their physician) Need I say more?

Only one word came to mind when thinking of your "friend"....jealousy. That green eyed monster came blaring out and she was just trying to "one up" you. Move on to more better friends.

When I first graduated from LPN school and was still working as a CNA, a fellow CNA co-worker told me that she could never "settle" for being "just" an LPN and that she was determined to "someday" be an RN.

I asked her "Then how is it that you've been able to settle for being a CNA for the past 12 years? You're older than I am and have been a CNA most of your working adult life, yet being an LPN would somehow not be good enough for you? I don't get it."

Of course she blamed it all on the long waiting lists to get into RN programs, but I don't know too many people who supposedly have all of their prereq's finished and have been waiting for 12 years on a list to get into RN school.

That was in 1997 and she's STILL a CNA today.

It's a good thing she didn't waste her time becoming "just" an LPN. That would have been a really bad career move, now wouldn't it?

First - congrats!

Second - LPNs are nurses. I was an LPN too and then an RN. The reason was for the opportunities - much broader as an RN. However, with an MSN, I have much broader opportunities too.

Each degree gives you more opportunities to advance. There is nothing wrong if you don't want to advance though. However, as we get older, we must all face the fact that we may not be able to do what we did at 20 as easily at 50 or 60 or 70.

That's exactly why I'm in school today. I don't know what I'm going to do with a BSN (and possibly someday an MSN - not sure if I want to to go that far) but what I do know is that I'm not going to be able to lift, tug, pull, and turn patients forever and as an LPN, there a very limited opportunities to move away from those types of non-direct care positions.
