I work on a med/surge unit and all day long, men can lay in perfect comfort to urinate in a convenient urinal. But WOMEN with horrible injuries have to be rolled to the side in extreme pain then have to sit on a bedpan and basically pee all over themselves anyway. We even put paper chucks on TOP of the bed pans because the bedpan just sticks to their skin and we cant get it out especially with heavy women. For a women to pee, we easily will use 2 full chucks and if a drop of urine makes it way on to the sheets, we have to do a bed change too.
Please tell me why we just dont hand them a Poise pad or even a toddler's pampers diaper to urinate easily, cleanly and comfortably? I have used both in emergency situations and they work AMAZING!!! Why O why are we still using bedpans for women?!?!?!
Hollister female urinary device
Female Urinary Pouches by Hollister | Medline Industries, Inc.
For us more "retro" nurses...Rrrrrrrriiiiipppppppppp!
Sorry I didn't comment yesterday. The OP's idea is not offensive or demeaning. There is should be no change in the patient's continence issues, just an adjustment in the method of "catching" the urine.
Lots of good suggestions out there I agree with. I think what work best is a hybrid type invention with a female urinal type device in combo with an absorbent collar that would catch the inevitable leaks.
Those collars could be replaced and even weighed to maintain strict I & O. We NICU nurses know the weights of all the sizes of infant incontinence briefs (would hate to use the D word). Before y'all discount my opinions cause I don't work with adults; I have more years of adult experience than probably 50% of the posters here.
Also, that female urine bag with the hydro colloid ring. . . YIKES!!
Maybe for patients with complete alopecia, or Media stars, otherwise, no way!!
Even Media stars probably aren't maintaining their...ahhmm..."hygiene" that well if they're in a situation where they need to pee into a bag. Unless they're highly paid Media stars that were able to take a more permenant approach. Although, perhaps they would approach the waxing tune up? Poor OP probably had no idea the life this thread would take on.
Female patients accept assistance with changing a peri pad when they are unable to take care of that themselves. Is it really that different to assist with urination using a toddler diaper? There is nothing undignified about containing urine in a couple of toddler diapers that are placed in combination with a fracture pain for cleanliness and comfort and promptly discarded. It would be far more humiliating to have that hollister product applied to the perineal area.
There is no pad that will hold the amount of urine without spilling. The urine will also make contact with the skin and harm the skin, and decrease the skin integrity. It's hard to shower the person properly as well, so the urine will burn burn burn that skin. Furthermore, it's demeaning and embarrassing to pee in bed, on a pad.

I'm not trying to be rude, but it seems like some people are not even reading the thread or trying to understand the intent of the OP.
1. The idea is to find a pad/ brief/ absorbant item that WILL hold the urine.
2. The pad/ brief would not be left in place but removed immediately, so there would be no burning/ harm to the skin (and toddler diapers or the equivalent are super absorbant and wick away the wetness).
3. It would be placed fitted to the body, so there would be no "peeing in the bed".
