Become a Nurse without Nursing School

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Anyone know of any opportunities abroad to become a nurse thru apprenticeship rather than thru traditional education?

(I'm fed up with looking for accelerated programs, having to meet bogus requirements, etc. I'd rather just do on-the-job training for 3/4 the pay in some other country. Anyone know of anything like this?)

I would love some! Only if it has chocolate drizzle. Lolololo. Mmmmmm.

Just so you know, the Boy Scouts sell a popcorn that had white and dark chocolate drizzle and it is amazing.

That is all. Carry on.

I believe this is the national health care system Britain. It seems to be based on the old model of nurse training prior to getting the college degree.

This has got to be from the 90s, most likely 80s about ENs id guess. Nurse education is degree level in the UK and is specialized you need to decide if you want to do adult, child, mental health, midwifery.

I want to be a princess, wear a tiara, and have my own castle. Is that possible without having to marry a prince since I'm not on a bloodline? I'm really tired of having to try and find these princes everywhere. You just have no idea how difficult it is to find a decent prince these days. But I would so love my own castle and tiara!!! Lol

What are you considering bogus requirements? And why the need for an accelerated program? There is absolutely nothing wrong with going the traditional degree route and meeting the standard requirements of a community college or university.

As for finding "opportunities abroad thru apprenticeship", have you considered the fact that it is very unlikely that should you choose to return to this country, no state BON would recognize that program (if it even exists) and give you a nursing license?

Tiaras aside, even if you could find such a program, it would not mean you could return to the U.S. and work as a nurse.

Stop eating your young! All s/he wants to know is how to fulfill his/her dreeeeeeaaaam/calling without all that patho and pharm bogusness. If you don't have anything uplifting to say, don't reply. :nono:

In all seriousness, OP, what is your understanding of what nurses do? I asked because it was drilled into me during school that we are ALWAYS to understand why. We are not drs' assistants who follow their orders military style. We implement parts of the medical plan of care when appropriate; when it's not, we don't. It is our license, and more importantly our pt's life. How to know these things are simply not possible to learn on the job alone.

Hospital-based diploma programs used to be common in the US, but they were more rigorous than today's university/tech school programs (based on how I've heard their graduates describe them.) They did have classes, anyway.

Nursing is really really difficult work. You do not want to settle for less pay, just to get out of a few months' worth of classes. Like PPs have said, you would never work in the US. To be allowed to sit for our licensing exam, we have to have graduated from an accredited nursing program. What languages are you fluent in besides English? Because RNs in the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand all have to obtain a university degree.

I wonder if the OP is even going to return?

Unlikely. I think this was a Hit-and-Run kind of thread. One Post Wonder.

I was just thinking, in reading this, about all the hoopla surrounding the degrees involved in nursing. The ones asking whether ADN is enough....no, it needs to be a minimum of BSN....no, we should be looking at MSN as entry-level.

And here we have the question as to whether someone can....y'know.....just do OTJ training. It's just the same as a degree in nursing if the person who is teaching you doesn't make you do any "bogus stuff"....right?

I should have stayed in bed today.

A nurse without the proper education is not a safe nurse. Apprenticeship can teach you skills such as injections, catheters, and other things, but it does not teach you why we do what we do. A nurse needs to be a critical thinker and be able to make good judgment calls. The requirements of nursing school are there for a reason. You need a good foundation to build your career on.
