Average GPA

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Does anyone know that is the average GPA for entry into a nursing program? I currently hold a 3.4. :uhoh3:

The required GPA to get in our nursing school is 2.5....but they would never accept anyone with that low of a GPA. I hear that a 3.5 is competitive here. I currently have a 3.75 with only 2 more non clincal classes to go (all pre-reqs done) so I am hoping when I apply this summer I will have a good shot!

My CC requires 2.5 but it is best to have 3.5-4.00, additionally they are giving extra points for any additional degrees ( the higher the better), and you can earn extra points by not having any F's in your college history and have less than 2 Withdrawals in past 12 months ( you can only drop one class in period of 12 months) I have 8.5 points on scale of 10, there is 1000 applicants for 60 spots, but a lot of them will be denied because they live out of district, well im nervous about my letter yet to come because my chances are like 50/50, keep smiling guys

The minimum GPA at my school is a 2.0 but everyone knows that you need a 3.7-4.0 to get in. B's as a nurse are, in my opinion, skating on the edge. Hopefully a 3.4 is good enough for you to get in.

Our college goes 2 different ways, if you apply for the whole deal, they go off of your high school transcripts, and your compass scores, or you act scores, or your sat scores. if you enter second year because you are already an lpn, you have to have a gpa of 2.5. our college also started a second full-time day program that starts every winter term. so now they have 4 programs going. 2 first year, and 2 second year. Im in the first winter full-time program, and will finish second year in november and test for my RN, it has been a challenge because they do not have all the kinks figured out yet. but they are able to not have a waiting list this way. each program accepts approx. 90 students. they also have an evening part-time program for first and second year.

I've seen some schools with 2.0 gpa and some with 3.8. It all depends on the location of the school.

IMHO, B's are ok. I mean not the most competitive but grades dont define success in a program.

I know it is a different field--but my sister has been a B student all her life and got into a top notch Pharmacy School leading to a doctorate which is way more competitive than nursing school.

I also believe schools that focus only on grades as the sole admission criteria are a bit flawed. It seems that these schools tend to have a higher attrition rate than schools that look holistically at the applicant.

You have got to be kidding me. "B's as a nurse are, in my opinion, skating on the edge." I understand that students should strive to do the best they can (especially considering the extremely competitiveness among nursing schools). However, people who get B's in pre-nursing classes and nursing classes are not going to make any less of a nurse.

So many colleges really emphasize that most people won't be accepted into the nursing program. To me, my school gave me such a negative outlook that I felt I'd never be good enough to get into the clinical classes.

I'm really happy about the college I'm planning to transfer to because, although they are very prestige, they make the goal seem very attainable.

its all about the hard work and the outlook!

I currently have a 4.0 but to get in the program you need at least a 2.3. Yeah right the school would never let anyone in the program with a 2.3. The average is like 3.6 of the students that were accepted. Its so competitive. ITs horrible!

I think it's pretty funny that people think they know how things work in a school that they don't even go to. :uhoh3:

...I agree with everyone else who says that it depends on the program. You may want to call and ask them what is considered competitive, for this year. Depending on the applicant pool, it can change drastically from year to year. I was accepted into a private school two weeks ago that had 500 applicants and 20 spots. My GPA was a 3.51, coming from a 4 year school, with some nursing credits already in there. I know, a 3.51..that's not all that impressive..I can't speak for ADN programs, but I do know that BSN programs put a lot of emphasis on other factors as well. EXPERIENCE is huge. One of my friends from my program was rejected in 2005, having little to no experience and a 3.7 from a BigTen school. She took the next year off to work as a CNA and was accepted for 2006. I have a lot of both paid and volunteer experience, and I really sold that in the essay.. (it also never hurts to put something in your essay about continuing on to become a nurse educator sometime in the future)

I guess my point of this message is to just say relax! GPA is important, but it is by no means everything. You will get in to the right school, for you. :)

As a person who is returning to college after already getting a BA in another area I have realized that what I thought was a good GPA for that is NOT for nursing! :) I had a B average...I had to work 2-3 jobs at a time to get through and I also never had to study in high school and always made A's and B's so I didn't know how to study and figured B's were fine with me for not much effort. I never thought my 3.0 GPA would come back to haunt me but it is. I have decided to go back to school for nursing and all the pre-reqs that are counted are B's so that leaves me with a 3.0 GPA....LUCKILY Edison College in Fort Myers has a point system that counts more than just a person's GPA....I get points for having 5 of the 8 pre-reqs. We also had to take the ACT and I made high enough scores to get all the points for the ACT composite and ACT reading. I'm hoping those points will carry me though for acceptance this summer.

I think schools should look at more than just GPA. There are amazing people out there who would make great nurses but they aren't given the chance and then there are people are "book smart" but lack the passion, compassion and real life wisdom to make a good nurse but they get in b/c of grades. I just think there are more to people than their class grade but that's just me.....I might think different if I were a straight A student. :)

I will say, reading all these posts has challenged me. I'll be applying at the end of June for the RN evening program and I'll continue to teach full time (I teach sign language at a high school) while I'm in nursing school but I want to achieve higher grades in nursing school so I guess I'm going to have to learn how to study!
