Austin Community College Fall 2011 Hopefuls

Published

Any Fall 2011 ACC hopefuls out there? I start my nursing skills class in March and am very excited. I'm reapplying next week for the Fall. If I calculated my ranking correctly I should make it in.

Good luck everyone!

Do you think they will use the same book for the summer?

I want to buy it!!!

I want to buy it too!

We were told they were switching from Harkreader's Fundamentals to that other book -- they're also going to be replacing the ACC skills videos with ones from the company that manufactures the new textbook. (I imagine that means all the checkoff sheets will be updated to correspond to the videos, too.)

thanks for the update

Yes, we heard this, too, and the reason given was that Harkreader will not be updating her text.

I'm pretty sure they will still be using this Taylor book. It was just published with a copyright of 2011. Can't imagine they'd switch for summer. It weighs exactly 10 lbs and is 2.5 inches thick. Tonight I discovered that handwashing and other basic medical asepsis aren't covered until page 655. Wow.

Get used to that! We have been jumping all around the textbook. We really haven't done any chapters in order. One test could have material from Chapters 1,5,6,37,39 while the next is Chapters 5,7,30,45! Crazy!

Hi to all!

There is an update on the ADN website, looks like the week of April 18th they will be sending Skills petitions and in June acceptance letters!!

awesome... thanks!

Yup, that describes our class. It also seems that the test questions are based on the old study guides. The joys of "guinea pigging" new curriculum! I don't understand why this text was chosen if it's format is not appropriate for the class structure. I'd much rather read a chapter and be able to actually answer review questions in the text than read a page here and a page there. I feel like I have no way to check my knowledge after studying.

Hello ACC future nurses

I just want to wish you the best and get prepare to handle the nursing instructors, clinicals, tons of paper work; and at the end be prepare to wait between 6 months up to a year to find a job as newly graduated RN. The job waiting part is what none one will tell you about until is too late to go back and chance your mind before become a nurse!

Yes, but isn't that the risk you take with ANY profession you go into. Most of us are going to nursing school because we love the medical field and want to expand and share the knowledge we gain. Nursing is not so much a career yet a privilege, an unspoken understanding you earn from your patients and I personally would not trade that feeling for anything else. Should the students that are studying to be teachers change their major as well because of the cutbacks?
