Austin Community College Fall 2011 Hopefuls
I'm sure there are benefits and drawbacks to each campus. I have friends in Level 2 at both campuses so I was thorn as well. Since I live in Kyle I decided on EVC just because their clinicals are located at central/south hospitals. I have really loved my first semester at EVC even though it has been rather challenging. The professors each have a different style of teaching, some better than others, and clinicals are all together another story. I lucked out and had a great experience although I hear horror stories from some other students in other clinical groups. I think as long as you work hard and do what is expected of you, you should be fine. I made an A in my first 8 weeks and although I still have 2 tests ahead, so far it looks like another A may be in my future. My biggest pet peeve at this campus in Level 1 is that you can't be late. If you are, you get locked out of the classroom and have to wait till next break to be let in. You would think that all of us are mature adults that have made it into the nursing program and have no control over traffic/weather/etc. I can also tell you that each professor has a different way they like things done when it comes to check-off and you have to adjust accordingly which has been my biggest downfall (I had to recheck twice) As far as material goes, the information you learn is mainly critical thinking, nursing process, physical assessment, it's all application. The notes provided pretty much reflect all that you need to know and learning guides are provided. I started doing those at the beginning and by week 8 I quit doing them and concentrated on the notes and how to apply the information in a clinical setting. I really didn't review any of my pre-reqs other than dosage calculations. You will have a test at the beginning of the semester which consists of 10 questions and you have to pass w/a 90 or above. I'm sure someone that is at CEC will reply and give you some more info that will help you make a decision. Either way, fingers crossed that you get in.

Austin Community College - ACC - Spring '12 Hopefuls
Look me up on Facebook... The sections are all the same. I think depending on how many people actually register they may divide us up into a morning and afternoon class. They did not do that at EVC this semester because they only had around 30 people. I have a friend who just finished the semester and out of her clinical group that started with 10 there are only 5 or 6 left. Wonder how many people the other 2 groups ended up with?

I took the CPR class with Janna from Sav-A-Heart and it was $60. Looking forward to the workshop on Friday, hopefully I will have my packet done by then so I don't have to make an extra trip.

Does anyone know how many they actually accepted? I am curious to see if they cut the class sizes even more since last semester. I think almost 20 people deferred last semester so fingers crossed for you.

I originally applied for Fall 2011 with a 53.4 and was 11 people shy of getting in. I reapplied for Spring 2012 with a 62.19.

Eastview or CEC. I live way down South in Kyle so RR is not an option. I wonder how many people were accepted. On the website it states that they were accepting a smaller size class and I'm wondering as oppose to what? Last semester they took 108, the semester before that it was close to 160.

Nope, not yet. Last semester the emails were all sent between 3-5pm. Not sure if the helps but keep us posted if you hear anything. I will be sitting in class all day.

I had the same grades as you and 2 B's in co req. I figured based on the previous semester that I had nothing to worry about. Due to the shortage of teachers they cut the number of students to 108. Good luck to you in the future.

Unfortunately yes. This process is very frustrating but don't give up. I took Nursing Skills in the Summer and did not make it into the Fall class.

I have two kiddos (ages 8 and 11), work part time and go to school two classes at a time. I applied for Fall 2011 but was 11 people short of getting in. I already took Nursing Skills so fingers crossed I will get in this Spring. Going to school for the past two years while having a family and a job has been difficult, but it has proven to me that if you want something bad enough you will work around obstacles and push through those days where you feel like there is no end. I think the program will be difficult and time consuming, but I hear the same story from moms that are either in the program or have graduated. They are more motivated and find the program more rewarding because they are doing it not only for themselves but for their kids future, hence better grades and a sense of accomplishment. As far as expenses go, I have always gotten a PELL grant and an ACC grant and once in a while I will also accept the subsidized loan(does not have to be re-payed until you graduate and most employers will actually help you pay off school loans). Also go and apply on the ACC webpage for a scholarship. I didn't think I would get any $ but it turn out I was wrong. I lucked out and the foundation I got the scholarship from is covering the cost of classes and books for the entire nursing program. There are tons of options out there, go talk to a financial advisor and they will point you in the right direction. Good luck.

I'm a mom of two boys, mine are a bit older 8 and 10. From what I understand, unless you are doing the hybrid program, you really can't plan ahead because you will not know till the week before if you are in the morning or afternoon classes/labs. I now work part time, but if I get accepted I will be quitting to concentrate on school. You can go on the ADN website and click on the campus you are interested in to see approximate workload/time/etc. As far as the cutoff scores go, the word is 52-53. Hope this helps.

In that case, I am in the same boat. I have a foreclosure and some other bad debts from years ago, but that's life. Nothing I can do about it now, so might as well not dwell on it. I'm sure they are more interested in the criminal part.
