Austin Community College Fall 2011 Hopefuls

Published

Any Fall 2011 ACC hopefuls out there? I start my nursing skills class in March and am very excited. I'm reapplying next week for the Fall. If I calculated my ranking correctly I should make it in.

Good luck everyone!

Yes ma'am, I also applied for the Fall but my score is nowhere near perfect. I have 2 B's from classes that I took over 12 years ago, so I am really not holding my breath on getting in the first time around. I have a couple of friends that have perfect scores so it will be tough to see them get in since we have been virtually inseparable through anatomy, micro, and phys.

when I talked to ***** ( she does all the ranking and admission) she said the rankings from the couple of the previous semesters were around 52- 53 to be admitted.

2 B's and barely miss it... that's too damn hard!!!

Thanks for the info. That makes me feel better about possibly getting in, but I guess it really depends on how many people re-apply.

What was your ranking or points las time you applied, if you don't mind?

And most of the time, loads of students either defer or don't pass background checks. I was a Fall 2010 applicant and was denied with a rank of 50 or 51. I had a 3.6 GPA with all pre and co-reqs done and a 10 on the HESI. I was devastated. Then about 3 weeks later, I received an offer for CEC. I had to defer because I really wanted hybrid. Second time I applied I was able to count my RNSG 1105 class in addition to the extra re-application points.

Contrary to popular belief, not everyone wants hybrid. There are some students who think they want hybrid and then they go through the jump start session or wait until the first day of official orientation to decide they need the structure of onsite lectures and they switch at the last minute.

Hybrid Level 1 is the option I am in right now and I wouldn't trade it for the world. Even though we don't have classes on Mondays and Tuesdays we have optional online seminars with the instructors and they pretty much lecture for an hour and a half and you can join the chat session and ask any questions you want. If you can't attend the online seminars at the designated "live time" then they are available to watch later because they are recorded everytime. Since labs are sometimes 0800-1500, the instructors will spend 2-3 hours lecturing about the lab modules before you actually get to practice them. So there are plenty of learning resources at our disposal. Some students though still feel the need for more structure and would rather sit in lecture 4 hours a day twice a week.

I would be happy to answer any questions that ya'll may have about level 1. If I don't know the answer I will try my best to find out the answer.

I'm currently in hybrid Level 2 -- it's not quite as awesome as Level 1, but it's still pretty awesome. We don't get the online seminars anymore, unfortunately; they're on-site at the RR campus.

After the first three hell weeks, Level 1 felt surprisingly manageable. You have one class at a time, so while it's a lot of material, you can really focus on it. The instructors were nothing short of amazing. They all have totally different attitudes so you get a lot of perspectives.

I have my fingers crossed for all of you! The wait will be worth it, I promise.

p.s. Get the Saunders NCLEX guide when you start. It's amazing how much easier the tests are when you use Saunders to study for them! Plus, it matches up nicely with the Lewis med-surg text. They're from the same publisher.

I think my previous ranking was around a 48. I have a couple of B's from my previous degree. Also, ACC Nursing didn't accept my prior Human Growth and Development coreq. So, I lost a multiplier. If I calculated my ranking correctly this time around I have a 57.66. My nursing skills class won't count because I'm taking it after applying.

What campus will you be taking your nursing skills class at? I am almost 100% positive that you will make it in this time!

I am wondering if they will issue any more petitions for the spots they have left for Spring's nursing skills. I want one of those spots :crying2:

Eastview. Thanks! I hope so. My original plan (when I was silly, naive, and didn't realize how competitive this all is) was to attend Texas Tech's Second Degree program. Yeah, right! There are people with 4.0s and years of experience who don't make it into that program. I felt honored to have landed an interview. ACC has a great program and I'm excited (and terrified) to start.

Purkinje,

I just looked on Amazon and there are so many Saunders NCLEX guides. Can you specify which one you are using? Also, congrats on getting in... I have been reading the Spring 2011 hopefuls thread and your post were very helpful.

It's this one, which is the updated version from October 2010:

In addition to a review of the material and information about important nursing interventions, there are questions in the book and on the CD that comes with it. The rationales are very detailed as to why answers are right or why they are wrong -- which is something that the Blackboard quizzes sometimes lack. It also addresses prioritization, so you'll have a good foundation as you go through clinicals.

I also bought the Saunders NCLEX RN app for iphone. I make it a point to review it every night and it is extremely helpful. Like Purkinje stated, whether you get it right or wrong it tells you rationales. Very invaluable!
