It has been painfully obvious at my school that the students that look like super models got GN jobs right away. Yeah the average looking students are starting to get job now too but they didn't land the first job they interviewed for like the good looking students did. How unfair is that. Has anyone else seen this at their school?

I agree with you. Four of us went for interviews and the two super model girls got hired first and they told us two that they would call but they never called.

I recall noticing the same thing happening when CNAs would go for jobs at our local hospital. The attractive ones got hired, the less attractive ones got told to take a hike if they were responded to at all.

Especially if it's at a children's hospital or on a labor & delivery unit. Usually those types of CNAs are nursing students as well.

Appearance matters. I doubt very much it is even conscious on the part of those hiring. It is likely those who take good care of themselves are more confident in their demeanor and therefore represent themselves better. Just take a lesson from it and be the best you can be. Fair or unfair, EVERYONE on earth is judged by their appearance and everyone on earth judges others based on appearance. It is normal and natural, regardless of whether it is fair. "Attractive" is often a matter of grooming, hygiene, posture, mode of dress and level of confidence (eye contact, firm handshake, appropriate give and take in conversation etc). Take what you can from it to put your best foot forward. You may never be a supermodel, but it WILL increase your chances and give a lasting positive impression.

I have seen the same thing happen all over the world in every job in every industry in which I have ever worked.
I am a very attractive person who takes care of herself. However, I am not a tooth pick, I am a woman with the appropriate flesh on and they still did not take me. I believe that some people look for certain things on a person even if that person is dumb! I can testify to that because one of the girls was so dumb in answering questions, the charge nurse was not impress, however, I heard a doctor telling the manager that the blonde is beautiful and he is looking forward to see her working there soon. Lo and behold she was chosen. This is just my experience I am not generalizing.

The attractive students do have an advantage because they are nice to look at but conducting yourself in a positive, confident manner and remembering to smile goes a long way. Make sure to prepare before you go on your interview ( "knock em dead" book is good), ask questions, and give the interviewer a sense of who you are and why they should pick you.

Exactly. There have been numerous studies done (in fields other than healthcare) that have found that (duh!!!) more attractive people have a distinct advantage in hiring, promotions, etc. We are all apparently biologically programmed to respond to people who are more physically attractive by our society's standards, which makes sense, I guess.

there was a segment on the local news last night about an increase in cosmetic surgeries in this recession. I've seen the plastic girls, i mean attractive ones from my class get the jobs first.

Interesting. But what about all the posts about young, attractive RNs getting abused and chewed up by the grizzled old vets?
Are the HR managers hiring attractive nurses because it is more fun for the current staff to abuse them?
