I skimmed through the Atkins book yesterday at Wal-mart. After looking at some of the recipes I just don't know if I can eat like that. I am not a big "meat" person to start with. I eat meat, but always while eating it I think about what I am eating and sometmes get sick. So my meat portions are usually small but I do eat a lot of pastas....So if I substituted all the pasta for fresh fruit and veggies do you think that would help?? Or do you have to really have no carbs at all for that induction period?

Hi there,

How about substituting tofu instead of the meat. You really need your protein.

Good idea, I will try that Jen, thanks!

you need 20 grams of carbs on induction mainly from 3 cups of vegetables per day. i break it down into a 2 cup salad (chicken and cheese) at lunch and 1 cup of other veggies at dinner with some sort of meat. a good website is http://www.atkins.com

they have lots of online info if you don't want to buy the book.

My husband and I started the Atkins diet Jan 2003. He's lost 75 lbs and I've lost 62. My labs were done in Jan 2004 before having surgery and my doctor couldn't get over how my bad cholesterol had gone down and good had gone up on Atkins. I really like the fact that a lot of low-carb products are coming out. My tastebuds have changed so much in the past 16 months that regular foods don't taste the same. And when I did have a higher carb day, it seemed to boost my metabolism. I actually lost weight over a "binge".

I am so intrigued by Atkins, but at the same time, terrified! I am an absolute carb addict. I can't imagine not eating bagels, english muffins, toast, cereal - and those are just the breakfast foods I'd have to give up! I LOOOOOVE pasta. I loooooooove Mexican food like tacos, etc. I do enjoy fruits and veggies, though I think I heard that carrots and tomatoes are no-no's? Those are among my favorites :o I love cheese. But I adore potatoes, too. I do like sweet potatoes - is that ok?? Is there hope for me on Atkins??? I need to lose about 60 pounds.

You may love all of those foods, but does your body?

Whole grain breads are fine, but in moderation. I eat carrots frequently, but I do not follow the diet to the letter and it works for me. You will need to cut out all of the breads, and anyhting with white sugar. Pasta is okay, if it is made from whole wheat, but then again not on a daily basis.

Once you cut out the sugars, you will find that you don't want many of those other foods and you will have so much more energy.

Good luck.................. :balloons:

I'm doing my own version of the Atkins "intro" phase...it's sort of like the South Beach diet, which is basically sensible eating. I eat a bowl of oatmeal for the insoluble fiber (helps with cholesterol) and a bowl of a very high soluble fiber cereal (to keep things in the G.I. tract running smoothly). Other than the aforementioned things and nonstarchy veggies, I don't eat many other carbs. So that means no sugar, rice, or pasta. These things used to be staples in my diet, so I know how you feel. I used to think that Bagels were god's gift to me. It was a little difficult at first; I actually started craving mixed drinks (like Cosmos and Pina Coladas). I got over it quickly, thank god. My advice to you would be to start out slow. Definitely cut out starchy vegetables first. No, sweet potatoes aren't okay. Yes, I do "cheat" once in a while, but it's okay because I don't make white flour and starchy veggies the main part of my diet.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do! Yes, there is hope for you!

Don't forget the 8 glasses of water a day! :)

So can someone post what a typical day's diet looks like, from morning to night? I eat carbs throughout the day (becoming more conscious of it now) and I just can't imagine what to eat instead! Thanks!

In the morning I have 2eggs with 1 oz of chedder cheese and bacon.

For a snack I have deviled eggs with a beef jerky (use dill pickles not sweet)

Lunch is a HUGE salad with tuna or chicken in it and some dressing (2g or less of carbs per tablespoon)

Dinner is some meat(chicken beef or pork chops) with green beans and cole slaw (use splenda in it)

Snack #2 nuts and cheese:)

Taco salad is GREAT! Make home made chile with canned tomatoes and chile powder. then add chedder cheese and lettuce and tomatoes and yes you can have SOME sour cream. And if you are like me and LOVE hot peppers LOAD them on. Great lunch idea too:p
