Ashamed of nursing school

Published

Are any of you other nursing students ashamed that you are in nursing school? I personally am and heres why- At the community college I attend if you were to ask 10 students what their major is 9 would say nursing and more than likely only 1 would actually be in the nursing program. Many of those same ppl that hope to become nurses cant even read on a college level.

I'm not at all ashamed of being a nursing major. Honestly, if we nursing students and nurses aren't proud of our work and appreciate every bit of it, who will? But, I get what you mean, when there are those that don't even understand the profession and are just trying to get in the program because they think the money is good. The truth is, those individuals won't make it in the program. I'm in a BSN program right now... and honestly... it's tough... if you're not passionate or even caring about others...you'll be second guessing yourself... But, because... I want this so much... I'm giving me allllllllllllllllllll........ SO DEEPLY PROUD of MYSELF... I'm gonna be a RN NURSE in the future and when I get old I'll be depending on a NURSE and not ashamed of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its ludacris to go into nursing or any other female dominated profession for money because they are UNDERPAID for what they do.

While I agree that in many areas of the US, Nurses are horribly underpaid, I do did think that, in general, the pay is decent for the educational requirements it entails. I make more money than many people that I know.

If people see that they can make X amount of money with a minimum of an Associates degree, I can see how Nursing would be a more desirable major.

This is so not true. If they are determined, they WILL make it.

Also, I thought I knew what it was to be a nurse when I was a student. I didn't truly know until I started working as a nurse.

honestly OP, that was an insulting (never mind very negative) post about your fellow nursing students. i would hope you don't air your grievances with nursing school to non-nursing majors and the general public. it sucks when we look bad...but more so from members (or soon to be) of our profession.

perhaps your opinion does have some truth to it and that's why many hospitals are requiring BSNs...?

If you dont feel the same way I do, its okay!

I don't like to tell people I'm in nursing school but its for an entirely different reason. My reason is because I just graduated with a bachelor's degree 2 years ago. I was unable to find a job so I decided to be proactive and go to nursing school.

I guess I'm afraid people will think I'm a loser since I couldn't find a job with my other degree or whatever. Also, I often get the response "Oh, you're in nursing school? I thought you JUST graduated from school????" So yeah. But, I'm not ashamed. My nursing school is notoriously hard to get into so I can be proud that I got in the first time I applied and I was top candidate.

If this is what you want to do, why be ashamed? It just doesn't make sense to me to be worried about little things like this. Nurses should be proud of their profession!!!!

No, I wasnt ashamed of being in school for nursing. What I was often ashamed about was the politics associated with the department and the blatant abuse of power often exercised by certain individuals and faculty.

But I got my degree and am a RN and that was the goal. So no, I am not ashamed of that in the slightest.

Can I still like the money?

I don't broadcast it because I always get, "D***, why'd you leave that awesome, cake job you had?"

I don't think it's insulting at all. It's the truth, at least in my experience. I can definitely relate. My school is more concerned with the business over the quality of education. They just let anyone and everyone in. Does that mean all of these people will pass the NCLEX-RN and become nurses? Nope.

Is it the majority of students as well? No. And I'm pretty sure there are these people in every major.

You know it's not good when they spell the number "four" as "foe." I mean, come on!!!!!!

You really don't know what level they read or write on are you grading the papers they write and some people can read very well they just have a problem reading out loud besides everyone has subjects that they are good at and subjects they are bad at I don't care what other people are doing I just care about me passing nursing school
