Ashamed of nursing school

Published

Are any of you other nursing students ashamed that you are in nursing school? I personally am and heres why- At the community college I attend if you were to ask 10 students what their major is 9 would say nursing and more than likely only 1 would actually be in the nursing program. Many of those same ppl that hope to become nurses cant even read on a college level.

I don't get why you are ashamed. At my CC, there are probably 50 or so people in "Pre Nursing" classes for every student in the nursing program. Most of them won't get in and I'm certainly not ashamed of the ones that do. I'm not ashamed of the ones that don't - as long as they give it their best try.

I remember my Chemistry class and there was a girl next to me who said, "All this stuff doesn't matter at all to me. I'm going to be a nurse so who cares if I know chemistry?"

My study partner (currently in the Dental Hygiene program) said to me, "I hope she is never my nurse."

"I don't think you are going to have to worry about it," I answered.

You’re not playing devil’s advocate. You are simply reiterating my point. There is nothing wrong with wanting to become a nurse because of a good salary. I do think that it takes a person wanting to help others to become a nurse. My argument simply is the fact of so many posters commenting that going into nursing for the money is wrong. I don’t think it is wrong. There are so many different avenues to take with nursing. I will be honest when I say I have a small tolerance for ignorance, hateful people, and self-absorbed people, to name a few. Because I know of my short comings, being a bed side nurse until I retire is not practical. I graduate in April of 2011 with my BSN. I will be attending another university in the spring of 2012 to begin working on my PhD in Nursing Science. I know that I am better suited for university teaching and research. I think it should be everyone’s goal to be “good” at whatever they pursue.

My post was in regards to this comment. " If you became a nurse because you “love helping people” and the money doesn’t matter, then quit your job, and volunteer at a health clinic serving our vulnerable population. Give you job to someone who wants to make a decent living." Why should someone have to completely give up their income because their reasoning for going into nursing wasn't about the money as much as it was about helping people? Because they want to help people they don't deserve to still be compensated for the work they are doing? Money might not be their driving force for going into it, but it doesn't mean they shouldn't be entitled to getting the same compensation. I am sure they still have bills to pay.

I think the replyers to my post are missing the point Im trying to convey. Im not at all ashamed of the nursing profession. Nurses are patient advocates, educators, and healthcare providers all wrapped up into one. In my opinion they are the most versatile of any profession around today. Im ashamed of the ppl that just close their eyes and go... ini meni mini moe... I think Ill be a nurse cause it looks easy and they make alot of money.

Its ludacris to go into nursing or any other female dominated profession for money because they are UNDERPAID for what they do.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to go to medical school after nursing school. As I go through my program I'm finding that I like puzzle aspect of medicine, but I still enjoy nursing and will work as a nurse to finance my way through med school. Nurse practitioners don't do much in the way of diagnosing, and there's no such thing a NP with a concentration in pathology and virology. :-)

Well, since you're not one of those people, I don't see why you would be all worked up about them. Yes, I've encountered many of those at my school, but since I know the vast majority will not make it in the program, it doesn't bother me. The ones who do make it are usually the ones who should.
