Just curious if any of y'all know of places that hire LVN's to work in the correctional setting or if you have to be an RN before your considered?

I know of many places that do.

Many places do hire LPN/LVN's. However, there are some correctional facilities that only hire RN's. Good luck with your search :)

I know that the State of CT is always looking for LPN's which is the same as LVN's. I hope this helps you. Good luck!

Yes, they do in Texas. I used to work for the Bill Clements Unit Maximum Security Mens Unit, just outside of Amarillo,Tx. New FONT]

I know the state of Texas hires LVN's in correctional facilities. http://www.cmsstl.com and another website is http://www.utmb.edu - look under careers, then select correctional facilities.

Here in WV all of the jails/prisons use LPN's.

state Department of Corrections: YES and always begging

Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) YES all LPN staff with RN supervisor

Correctional Medical Services (CMS) YES and they beg more than the state

As far as I know the federal prisons are the only prisons in this state that only hire RNs, but I have been told that federal prisons in some neighboring states do hire LPNs.

Someone listed CMS's website. CCAs is http://www.correctionscorp.com .

I don't know what state you are in, but here in NC the Dept. of Correction does hire LPNs. As a matter of fact, they are happy to get ANY nurse they can get, at least that's the way it is at the facility where I am currently a corrections officer. I start LPN school in August. I will not work for any prison when I'm done because I know how prisons really work. We only have a staff of about 20 nurses and they are constantly quitting. For some reason, the Dept. of Correction here in NC have a hard time keeping nurses in any of the NC prisons. Good luck with your search.

I am thinking of relocating to Raleigh in the future. I may have to return to correctional nursing due to back and rib chronic pain. Please tell me why you wouldn't want to work NC corrections as a nurse. What do you think is causing the nurses to quit all the time? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

I think one of the reasons nurses are quitting in droves at the prison where I work is inconsistency. The policies/rules of the Medical Dept. are constantly changing. Where I work the inmates really have to be catered to because the state is so afraid of lawsuits. I can't speak for all of the NC prisons, so I don't know if they all work the same. If you are planning to relocate to Raleigh and you have had health problems in the past, I definitely would not recommend Central Prison. You might want to try a smaller one such as Wake Correctional. There is also NCCIW (the women's prison), but it is a large facility, also. Good luck with whatever you decide.

How do I find a position as a correctional nurse in my area?

Excuse my newness -

I have been an LPN for close to 4 years and really want to get on at a local correctional facility. I have looked over their website and no employment needs for a correctional nurse. I have tried the services CMS but no responce - yet. Any hints or help is appreciated!!!!
